The Georgia Southern Eagles meet the Arkansas State Red Wolves Saturday in week 5 Sun Belt college football action from Paulson Stadium. Arkansas State is coming off a matchup versus Tulsa this past weekend. In that one the Red Wolves took a tough seven-point defeat. As for Georgia Southern, they played Louisiana in their last outing. The Eagles ended up losing by eight points there. Check back all season long for free college football picks at Sports Chat Place.
Arkansas State came out of the gate strong this year with a 40-21 win over Central Arkansas, but then fell in a tough one to Memphis 55-50 in game two. The Red Wolves couldn’t get anything going in their third outing, falling to Washington 52-3.
Last weekend versus Tulsa, Arkansas State gave up points in every quarter during an eventual 41-34 defeat. QB James Blackman had 321 yards with two TDs and one interception, and Corey Rucker caught four balls for 115 yards.
Over on the Georgia Southern side, they posted a nice 30-25 win over Gardner-Webb in their opener this year. The Eagles hit the skids after that however, falling 38-6 to Florida Atlantic and 45-10 to Arkansas in their next pair of games.
Georgia Southern played Louisiana in their last matchup. The Eagles were within one point (14-13) at halftime but ultimately fell 28-20. QB Justin Tomlin managed 175 yards with an interception, while Gerald Green had 186 yards and three scores on 18 carries.
The Red Wolves are 4-1 ATS in their last five overall and 4-9 ATS in their last 13 after an ATS win. Arkansas State is also 2-5 ATS versus a team with a winning record.
Meanwhile, the Eagles are 4-1 ATS in their last five overall and 4-1 ATS in their last five at home. Georgia Southern is 1-4 ATS versus a team with a losing record as well.
PICK: I’m going to try Georgia Southern, but probably staying away. The Eagles put up some decent offensive numbers in their last outing with 453 total yards, 5.6 yards per play and 23 first downs. That said, the Cajuns were opportunistic in the win and it cost Georgia Southern.
As for the Red Wolves, they coughed up 663 total yards and a 9.0-yard average per play to Tulsa. AR State had just 38 rush yards, two turnovers and 20 first downs. This should be an interesting game—the teams should matchup well—but I like the Eagles on a cover a little better.
