The Panthers opened the season with a pretty rough skid, winning just one of their first five games amid some very difficult matchups. That lone victory came on September 13 versus Murray State. Otherwise it was losses to Ole Miss, Memphis, Vanderbilt and James Madison in that time. The James Madison game back on October 4 was at least a close one; the Panthers only lost 14-7. In that matchup Georgia State posted just 37 rushing yards and 14 first downs while committing a whopping 15 penalties for 114 yards in an overall sloppy outing.

Last weekend versus Appalachian State, the Panthers faced a 17-0 deficit heading into the third quarter, then proceeded to give up 21 points in that frame. When the proverbial dust settled the Panthers had a 41-20 loss at home. QB Cameran Brown finished 19-of-35 for 212 yards and two scores, while Rashad Amos carried three times for 18 yards as the team’s top rusher. Tops in receiving was Ted Hurst with nine grabs for 109 yards. Javon Robinson added nine catches for 85 yards and the touchdown.

Over on the Eagles’ side, they’ve got a half dozen games in the books so far, winning just two of those. Georgia Southern opened up with losses versus Fresno State and USC, then got their first victory of the season against Jacksonville State in a tight 41-34 outcome. The Eagles followed that up with a 45-17 drubbing of Maine and a 35-10 loss to James Madison. In the loss to the Dukes, Georgia Southern came up with just 192 yards (27 rushing), 10 first downs and a 4-of-14 success rate on third-down tries. The defense couldn’t stop the run, giving up a whopping 331 yards on the ground.

In their latest outing last Thursday versus Southern Miss, Georgia Southern took another loss. The Eagles gave up points in every quarter (including 21 in the second alone) on the way to a 38-35 result. Georgia Southern did score 28 points in the second half but it wasn’t enough. QB JC French finished 24-of-43 for 313 yards, two scores and three interceptions (along with two running scores) and OJ Arnold led the rush with 13 carries for 56 yards. Tops in receiving was Camden Brown with 12 catches for 158 yards and a touchdown of his own.

I’m probably just going to stay with Georgia State. Also probably not touching this one, though. The Panthers do need a bounce-back effort here following a pretty listless loss to App State over the weekend, though. Georgia State posted 357 yards (54 rushing) with 24 first downs and 9-of-19 on third-down tries in that one. The defense gave up 435 yards on the other side alongside 23 first downs and 5-of-15 on third-down conversion attempts. The Panthers were playing from behind for pretty much the whole game, and they haven’t surpassed 21 points in three straight weeks (all losses). Georgia State does have a few pretty good performances this season however, even with the ugly overall record.
As for Georgia Southern, they started out pretty slowly in the loss to Southern Miss last Thursday but to their credit the Eagles got it going later in the game. The three interceptions and 12 penalties for 104 yards were the ugliest statistics, though. GA Southern has scored 35 or more points in three of the last four games, but they’re also giving up a lot to capable offenses on the other side.
