The Appalachian State Mountaineers and the Georgia State Panthers meet Saturday in college football action from Turner Field. Here’s a Georgia State vs Appalachian State prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best Georgia State vs Appalachian State pick.

Appalachian State Mountaineers Betting Preview

The Mountaineers have five games in the books so far this year, going a tepid 2-2 over their first four outings. Appalachian State kicked things off with a dominant road win over Charlotte 34-11, then eked one out versus Lindenwood 20-13 at home. The Mountaineers posted losses in their next two games, falling versus Southern Miss 38-22 and Boise State 47-14. In the loss to the Broncos, Appalachian State mustered just 184 total yards (65 passing) with 3.2 yards per play, nine first downs, 2-of-13 on third-down tries and four turnovers—not to mention 11 penalties for 94 yards.

Last weekend in their latest game versus Oregon State, the Mountaineers jumped out to a 17-0 lead after the first quarter but then gave most of it away with 14 unanswered points in the second. When the dust settled however, App State ended up winning 27-23. QB JJ Kohl logged a 13-of-28 line for 218 yards and a score while Rashod Dubinion carried 19 times for 98 yards and a TD of his own. Leading receiver Davion Dozier caught four balls for 140 yards and a touchdown in the winning effort.

Georgia State Panthers Betting Preview

Over on the Georgia State side, they opened with some tricky matchups this year and could only win one of their first four games. The Panthers kicked things off with a pair of losses, falling to Ole Miss 63-7 and Memphis 38-16 before finally getting a victory over Murray State 37-21 on September 13. Game four was a return to form versus a tough Vanderbilt team though, as Georgia State fell 70-21 in blowout fashion. The Panthers gave up a ton of production in that one, including 635 yards (349 passing), 8.9 yards per play, 30 first downs and a 6-of-10 success rate on third-down tries.

Matched up against James Madison last weekend, the Panthers held a 7-0 lead going into the second half but couldn’t score from there in a 14-7 defeat. QB TJ Finley was 19-of-28 for 198 yards and a touchdown. Tops in rushing was Rashad Amos with 11 totes for 30 yards, and Camden Overton had seven grabs for 65 yards and a touchdown of his own.

Georgia State vs Appalachian State Prediction

I’ll likely just stay with App State. The Mountaineers are coming off a nice win over Oregon State—even though the Beavers are struggling and winless this season, and despite a rough second quarter. In any case, Appalachian State would finish with 354 yards on offense, 5.5 yards per play, 18 first downs and a rough 4-of-12 on third-down tries. The defense gave up 358 passing yards (456 total), 6.5 yards per play and 27 first downs, but also held Oregon State to 4-of-11 on third-down conversions and had three takeaways. It was a nice bounce-back effort after giving up a combined 85 points to Southern Miss and Boise State over the previous two outings. If the Mountaineers can build off the momentum over the next few weeks, they’ll be looking good for a solid bowl bid when the season winds down.

As for Georgia State, they had a pretty rough offensive effort in the loss to JMU, committing 15 penalties in an overall sloppy game (26 total penalties). The seven points was a tie for the Panthers’ lowest total so far this year (Ole Miss), and although I like them to look better this weekend I don’t think Georgia State will cover.
