The Kent State Golden Flashes and Ohio Bobcats clash Saturday in week 5 MAC college football action from Dix Stadium. Ohio just finished up a game versus Fordham. In that matchup the Bobcats posted a high-scoring win. As for the Flashes, they took on Georgia in their last game. Kent State managed to fall by 17 points there. Ohio opened up the 2022 season with some dramatic flair, eking out a 41-38 win over Florida Atlantic in week one. The second game was a tough one versus Penn State in a 46-10 loss. The next week didn’t get much better with a 43-10 loss to Iowa State.
In the Fordham game, the Bobcats gave up 28 points in the third quarter alone but managed to catch fire from there in a 59-52 comeback win. QB Kurtis Rourke finished with 537 yards and four touchdowns. Jacoby Jones led the receivers with 104 yards and two TDs off six catches.
Over on the Kent State side, they had a couple of rough matchups right out of the gate this year. First was a 45-20 loss to Washington, then came a 33-33 blowout loss to Oklahoma. Kent State got a win in game three versus LIU 63-10, however.
Matched up against Georgia over the weekend, Kent State put up points in every quarter during an eventual 39-22 defeat. QB Collin Schlee finished with 174 yards, one TD and one pick. Marquez Cooper added 90 yards and a TD on 21 carries.
PICK: I’m going to stay with Ohio. The Bobcats did some great things in their win over Fordham this past weekend, including 692 total yards, 32 first downs and 8.4 yards per play. There’s still plenty to clean up however; Ohio gave up 640 yards, committed 11 penalties and lost a pair of fumbles.
As for Kent State, they didn’t do too badly versus a great Georgia team, coming up with three turnovers in their 17-point defeat. This should be a fairly comparable matchup, and we’ll get to see where the Flashes stand against a team that’s not elite-level national talent.
