The Marshall Thundering Herd and Appalachian State Mountaineers do battle Saturday in a week 11 Sun Belt conference college football matchup from Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
The Appalachian State Mountaineers will look to rebound from a 35-28 loss to Coastal Carolina in their last game to fall to 5-4 on the year. Chase Brice has thrown for 2,200 yards, 24 touchdowns and 5 interceptions on 65.2% passing while Camerun Peoples has a team-high 572 rushing yards with 6 touchdowns and Daetrich Harrington and Nate Noel have combined for 612 rushing yards this season. Christan Horn has a team-high 471 receiving yards while Dashaun Davis has 389 receiving yards with a team-high 33 catches and three more Mountaineers each have 200+ receiving yards this season for App State’s receiving group. On defense, Nick Ross has a team-high 51 total tackles while Nick Hampton has 8 sacks, Jalen McLeod has 5 sacks and Dexter Lawson Jr. has 3 interceptions.
The Marshall Thundering Herd will also be looking to get bowl eligibility, sitting at 5-4 after alternating wins and losses in each of their last 6 games following a 12-0 win over Old Dominion last time out. Henry Colombi has thrown for 943 yards, 6 touchdowns and 4 interceptions on 73.2% passing while Cam Fancher’s thrown for 768 yards, 2 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Khalan Laborn has a team-high 1,200 rushing yards and 13 scores this season. Corey Gammage has a team-high 38 catches for 562 yards and 4 touchdowns while two other Marshall receivers have 200+ receiving yards as well this season. On defense, Eli Neal has a team-high 60 total tackles while Owen Porter has a team-high 7.5 sacks and Marshall’s defense has combined for 26 sacks and 13 interceptions up to this point in the year.
Appalachian State is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games against a team with a winning record and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 conference games while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. Marshall is 6-21 ATS in their last 27 home games and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 home games.
I get the case to be made for a home underdog in some spots, but even with a low line, I can’t back Marshall here. The Herd just don’t have the offense to be able to match what App State’s going to bring to the table here, and I worry that this game could get out of hand early if Marshall’s forced to play from behind. The Mountaineers just have more potential in my opinion so I’ll side with App State on the road in this one.
