The Marshall Thundering Herd meet the Old Dominion Monarchs Saturday in Conference USA college football Week 6 action from Joan C. Edwards Stadium. Old Dominion is coming off a game versus UTEP last weekend. In that one the Monarchs lost by a touchdown. As for Marshall, they played Middle Tennessee in their last outing. The Herd ended up losing by six points. Check back all season long for free college football picks at Sports Chat Place.
Old Dominion had a tough matchup versus Wake Forest in their opener, losing 42-10. The Monarchs got a 47-7 win over Hampton in week two, but then fell in consecutive games to Liberty 45-17 and Buffalo 35-34 to fall to 1-3 on the year.
Last weekend versus UTEP, Old Dominion gave up eight unanswered points in the fourth quarter during a 28-21 defeat. QB DJ Mack put up 194 yards with one TD and one pick, while Zack Kuntz led the receivers on eight catches for 54 yards.
Over on the Marshall side, they came out of the gate strong with two big wins 49-7 over Navy and 44-10 over North Carolina Central. The Thundering Herd took a pair of tough losses after that however, falling 42-38 to East Carolina and 31-30 to Appalachian State.
In their matchup versus Middle Tennessee, Marshall outscored the Raiders 14-0 in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough to come back in a 34-28 loss. Grant Wells went 31-of-47 for 321 yards, one TD and two picks, and Rasheen Ali rushed for 113 yards and three scores off 19 carries.
ODU is 7-18-1 ATS in their last 26 conference games and 1-5 ATS in their last six in October. The over is 4-0 in the Monarchs’ last four conference games.
Meanwhile, the Herd are 2-6 ATS in their last eight overall and 2-6 ATS in their last eight after an ATS loss. Marshall is 1-4 ATS in their last five versus a team with a losing record.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Marshall. The Herd out-gained Middle Tennessee 493-314 last weekend and dominated many categories but they were done in by a few key mistakes. Namely, Marshall had nine penalties and coughed up a whopping six turnovers. They’re certainly going to have to play more disciplined football moving forward.
As for Old Dominion, they showed some promising flashes last weekend versus a pretty good UTEP team, but ultimately couldn’t keep up the scoring pace. The Monarchs had a pair of turnovers and a few costly penalties; I think they’ll play better here in a tight Herd cover.
