The East Carolina Pirates and the NC State Wolfpack meet Thursday in college football action from Carter-Finley Stadium. Here’s an NC State vs East Carolina prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best NC State vs East Carolina pick.
East Carolina Pirates Betting Preview
Overall, East Carolina had a pretty good (yet still disappointing) season in 2024 despite getting outclassed by some of the tougher teams in a competitive conference. The Pirates were able to finish at 8-5 overall and 5-3 in American Athletic Conference play. That result would put East Carolina in fifth place behind Army, Tulane, Navy and Memphis. The Pirates didn’t start out the season very well either. After seven games the team was flailing at 3-4 overall, and following back-to-back blowout losses to Charlotte and Army in October, head coach Mike Houston was shown the exit. Defensive coordinator Blake Harrell took the reins from there and the team showed much improvement. East Carolina would win five of their final six outings of the season, finishing off with a Military Bowl victory over NC State on December 28. The only blemish otherwise during that run was a November 29 home loss to Navy.
Looking ahead to the 2025 campaign, the Pirates have officially elevated Harrell to head coaching duties as a reward for his efforts late last season. He’ll have the usual bit of turnover to deal with, as ECU loses quite a few players to transfer. That group includes a couple headed to Austin Peay (DE Demoris Jenkins and RB Javious Bond) a decent WR in Chase Sowell (Iowa State). QB Mike Wright comes in from Northwestern after a couple of starts last year, though.
NC State Wolfpack Betting Preview
Over on the NC State side, they’re obviously coming off the aforementioned Military Bowl loss to ECU, though the game was close (26-21). Still, the Wolfpack will be trying to improve their conference record this season (3-5) following a disappointing campaign at 6-7 overall in 2024 as members of the ACC. NC State finished pretty far down the list in the conference standings, lagging behind SMU, Clemson, Miami-FL, Syracuse, Louisville, Georgia Tech, Duke, Virginia Tech, Boston College and Pittsburgh. The Wolfpack were only able to string together consecutive wins once last year (versus California and Stanford), and began their campaign at a sketchy 3-4. That said, if all breaks well for NC State in 2025 they should be able to do a bit more damage in the conference.
The Wolfpack get head coach Dave Doeren back for his 13th season as head coach. The team has new coordinators on both sides of the ball though, so we’re sure to see some growing pains in the early-going. Regardless, the passing game should be a fun watch. WRs Kevin Conception and Dacari Collins have moved on, but the team does retain some significant production behind them. That group includes Justin Holy and Noah Rogers, who combined for 78 receptions and over 1100 yards last year.

NC State vs East Carolina Prediction
I’m going to stick with East Carolina. The Pirates had quite the wild season in 2024, and this year they’ll be aiming for more consistency. The momentum is there following a great finish though, and this Military Bowl rematch should fill the team with confidence. Harrell is technically a new head coach, but he’s been around the team since early 2020 and has plenty of familiarity with the way things operate. The coaching staff and scheme on the offensive side of the ball remains pretty much the same, which is an excellent sign after averaging 32.0 points per game in 2024. The loss of a few playmakers like Sowell will sting, but East Carolina seemed to reload pretty well with transfers like Jaquaize Pettaway (Oklahoma). I like the Pirates to start out hot and cover here.
