The Nevada Wolf Pack meet the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors Saturday in MWC NCAA football action from Mackay Stadium in Reno. Hawaii is coming off a bye last week. The Warriors last saw the field in a tight win over Fresno State. As for the Wolf Pack, they played New Mexico State this past weekend. In that one Nevada cruised to a blowout victory. Hawaii began their year with a rough 44-10 defeat by UCLA in the opener, but bounced back in the next game with a 49-35 win over Portland State. The Warriors then lost to Oregon State 45-27 and San Jose State 17-13 before bagging wins over New Mexico State and Fresno State.
In the 27-24 win over the Bulldogs on October 2, Hawaii scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to power out the comeback victory. QB Brayden Schager put up 116 yards with two scores, and Dae Dae Hunter led the rush with 127 yards on 21 carries.
Over on the Nevada side, they opened their season with two wins 22-17 over California and 49-10 over Idaho State. The Wolf Pack then took a rough loss 38-17 to Kansas State, but bounced back with a win over Boise State 41-31 in game four.
Last weekend versus New Mexico State, Nevada scored 31 first-half points during a 55-28 win. QB Carson Strong had 377 yards with six touchdowns on 25-of-32 passing, and Melquan Stovall had seven catches for 155 yards and a TD.
The Warriors are 20-43-2 ATS in their last 65 on turf and 2-5 ATS in their last seven after a straight-up win. Hawaii is also 10-25-1 ATS in their last 36 in October.
Meanwhile, the Wolf Pack are 6-0 ATS in their last six after an ATS loss and 18-7-1 ATS in their last 26 at home. Nevada is 9-4-1 ATS in the last 14 in October as well.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on Hawaii here. The Warriors have been doing pretty well scoring-wise lately, posting 27 or more points in four of their last five outings. The win over Fresno State was an odd one, but Hawaii took advantage of the Bulldogs’ mistakes very well. Fresno State coughed up six turnovers and committed 10 penalties that kept the Warriors in the game.
As for Nevada, their passing game was working well against New Mexico State; the Wolf Pack put up 463 yards through the air and averaged 7.7 yards per play. The bad news is that Nevada went just 2-of-11 on third downs. This Hawaii matchup should be a fun one to watch.
