The Broncos beat Central Michigan in their latest outing. As for Northern Illinois, they’re sitting at 4-6 as well following a loss to Ball State last Tuesday. Western Michigan Broncos

The Broncos have generally scored pretty well this year so far. They’re averaging 27.4 points per game with 35 total touchdowns through 10 games. Western Michigan has 13 scores (with seven picks) through the air and another 20 through the rush. The ground game hasn’t been too bad with 4.0 yards per rush attempt and 168.7 yards per game.

In their latest matchup versus Central Michigan last Tuesday, the Broncos coughed up 21 unanswered points in the third quarter but rallied from there in a comeback win 38-28. Hayden Wolff put up 333 yards with three scores and an interception along the way, while Jalen Buckley led the rush with 117 yards and two scores on 23 carries.

Western Michigan Broncos Team Facts

  • The favorite has won each of Western Michigan’s last 10 games.
  • Western Michigan has covered the spread in each of its last eight road games against conference opponents.
  • Western Michigan has lost the first half in four of its last five games against conference opponents at Brigham Field at Huskie Stadium.
  • Seven of Western Michigan’s last eight games have gone OVER the total points line.

Northern Illinois Huskies

Over on the Northern Illinois side, they’re scoring slightly worse this year with 24.2 points per game and 30 total TDs so far. The Huskies similarly have a pretty strong ground game with 4.8 yards per play and 17 touchdowns on the season. NIU averages 195.3 yards per game through the air with 12 scores and seven interceptions along the way.

Northern Illinois took a disappointing loss in their last appearance versus Ball State. The Huskies were tied 10-10 heading into the final quarter but couldn’t break out in a 20-17 loss. Rocky Lombardi managed 141 yards on 15-of-26 passing and also scored on the ground. Topping the rush was Antario Brown with 18 carries for 73 yards.

Northern Illinois Huskies Team Facts

  • Northern Illinois has lost each of its last six November games as a home favorite against non-AP-ranked teams.
  • Northern Illinois has failed to cover the spread in each of its last 10 games as a home favorite.
  • Northern Illinois has lost the first half in six of its last eight games against conference opponents at Brigham Field at Huskie Stadium.
  • Seven of Northern Illinois’ last eight November games as a favorite against non-AP-ranked teams have gone OVER the total points line.

Matchup/League Facts

  • Western Michigan has suffered the equal-most road losses by a margin of 30+ points of any FBS team this season (2).

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I’m going to try the Broncos in this one, but you could argue it either way. Western Michigan is coming off a pretty decent overall effort in their comeback win versus Central Michigan, compiling 484 total yards (333 passing) and 23 first downs. The Broncos got into some trouble with penalties (10 for 87 yards) and went a tepid 6-of-16 on third-down tries, though. Still, that’s a combined 83 points over the last two games for WMU.

As for Northern Illinois, they lost three fumbles and went just 3-of-10 on third downs in their latest loss to Ball State. The Huskies were still in a position to win down the stretch, but the defense was a little too permissive at inopportune times. This should be a pretty fun matchup overall, but I like the Broncos to eke out the cover in the end.
