Drew Allar is back under center for Penn State after throwing for 3,327 yards, 24 touchdowns, and eight interceptions last season. He has been good, but Penn State really needs him to take that next step forward this season. The good news is he has some massive offensive linemen up front protecting him, including Drew Shelton who is one of the best in the Big Ten. 

On defense, Penn State gave up only 16.5 points per game, and they are going to lean on that side of the ball again here. This is really a game that the defense shouldn’t be all that tested, but that doesn’t mean they should be overlooking this. The last thing they need to happen is to pick up bad habits, because they are playing a team that isn’t on their level.

For the offense, Nevada is led by Chubby Purdy, who has bounced around college football, but is the perfect quarterback to lead this team. One issue for Purdy, though, is a lot of playmaking talent out wide is gone. The team has brought in Jordan Brown from Texas Tech, who should be an impact player early on. 

The area that Nevada needs to improve the most is with defense. Nevada really struggled getting off the field on third downs, and if that happens in this game, it’s going to be a long game. The pass rush was a major issue last season, but Dylan Labarbera is back, and the hope is he can even take a bigger step forward this season.

I do think Purdy is the perfect quarterback for Nevada, and he’s going to have a solid season, but it’s not going to happen in this game. Penn State’s defense is elite, and they are going to make life very difficult for Nevada’s ability to move the ball. Nevada’s defense had issues getting off the field last season, and they are going to be awful again here. Drew Allar is going to pick him apart, and this one is going to get ugly early.
