Penn State and Nevada meet Saturday in college football action from Beaver Stadium. Here’s a Penn State Nittany Lions vs Nevada prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best Penn State vs Nevada pick.
Can Penn State Live Up to the Expectations?
It really does look like Penn State is a true National Title contender on paper, but we all know college football isn’t played on paper, and far too often this team has failed to meet expectations. Last season, Penn State made it all the way to the Orange Bowl before they were knocked off by Notre Dame 27-24. Drew Allar is back under center for Penn State after throwing for 3,327 yards, 24 touchdowns, and eight interceptions last season. He has been good, but Penn State really needs him to take that next step forward this season. The good news is he has some massive offensive linemen up front protecting him, including Drew Shelton who is one of the best in the Big Ten.
On defense, Penn State gave up only 16.5 points per game, and they are going to lean on that side of the ball again here. This is really a game that the defense shouldn’t be all that tested, but that doesn’t mean they should be overlooking this. The last thing they need to happen is to pick up bad habits, because they are playing a team that isn’t on their level.
Why Penn State Will Beat Nevada
- Penn State has won each of its last 28 games against non-conference opponents at West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium.
- Nevada has lost 15 of its last 17 road games.
- Penn State has covered the spread in five of its last six season openers.
- Nevada has lost the first half in four of its last five road games against non-conference opponents.
Is the Rebuild over for Nevada?
Jeff Choate has quickly taken over and rebuilt the Nevada program, and the hope is that this the year the rebuild is finally over. Even if this game is a loss, that doesn’t mean the rebuild has failed, but if they are competitive in this game, even in a loss, that could create a whole lot of buzz. For the offense, Nevada is led by Chubby Purdy, who has bounced around college football, but is the perfect quarterback to lead this team. One issue for Purdy, though, is a lot of playmaking talent out wide is gone. The team has brought in Jordan Brown from Texas Tech, who should be an impact player early on.
The area that Nevada needs to improve the most is with defense. Nevada really struggled getting off the field on third downs, and if that happens in this game, it’s going to be a long game. The pass rush was a major issue last season, but Dylan Labarbera is back, and the hope is he can even take a bigger step forward this season.
Total Point Facts
- Four of Nevada’s last five road games against AP-ranked teams have gone UNDER the total points line.
- Each of Penn State’s last three games against non-AP-ranked teams have gone OVER the total points line.
Penn State vs Nevada Prediction
Is 44.5 points a lot to lay for Penn State? Sure, that’s a big number, but it’s still the right play here. I do think Purdy is the perfect quarterback for Nevada, and he’s going to have a solid season, but it’s not going to happen in this game. Penn State’s defense is elite, and they are going to make life very difficult for Nevada’s ability to move the ball. Nevada’s defense had issues getting off the field last season, and they are going to be awful again here. Drew Allar is going to pick him apart, and this one is going to get ugly early. Back Penn State to win this game and cover the spread.
