UMass Minutemen Betting Preview

There’s only one place to go but up this season for the Minutemen (well, technically they could tie but I digress). UMass had an absolutely abysmal campaign in 2025, failing to improve on an ugly 2-10 run from the year before. The Minutemen went winless at 0-12 overall and 0-8 in the Mid-American Conference, which obviously left the team in last place and two games behind the combo of Bowling Green and Northern Illinois. It was UMass’ first full winless season.

Moving on to this year’s campaign, UMass enters 2026 with a 16-game losing streak in tow. Head coach Joe Harasymiak is in his second year at the helm, and he’ll have a new offensive coordinator in Max Warner. The good news is that the Minutemen have an easier schedule on paper and a new QB in Virginia Tech transfer Pop Watson. The team’s work is cut out for them.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights Betting Preview

Over on the Rutgers side, they didn’t have the greatest campaign in 2025, but considering the stiff competition they faced in the Big Ten Conference the team didn’t perform too badly. The Knights ended up at 5-7 overall with a 2-7 run in the conference, placing them above only Wisconsin, Maryland, Michigan State and Purdue in the standings. After winning their first three straight games, the Scarlet Knights won only twice (over Purdue and Maryland) the rest of the way. Rutgers did get an invitation to the Birmingham Bowl at the end of the season but declined the offer.

This will be head coach Greg Schiano’s 18th year on the sidelines. He’ll be joined by new defensive coordinator Travis Johansen, who will attempt to stop the incoming conference competition. Athan Kaliakmanis has departed from the team, but Rutgers still retains offensive standouts Antwan Raymond and KJ Duff. They’ll be integral when it comes to finding some consistency on the scoreboard this year. The big question mark will be the defense, as that unit has undergone a top-to-bottom overhaul.

Rutgers vs UMass Prediction

I’ll stick with Rutgers I suppose. This is probably the best opening matchup that the Scarlet Knights could hope for. It shouldn’t be too hard for the team to assert their will on UMass in a home game, and the overmatched opponents should serve as a gentle introduction to game speed. Rutgers has some more winnable games early on in the season (including USC, Boston College and Howard) which should give them some much-needed confidence before hitting the real grinder of the Big Ten.

As for UMass, they’ve got questions all over the roster but it’s not unreasonable to expect four wins or so this season. The Minutemen have nothing to lose here, so you can expect them to go aggressive and attack from the opening whistle. I don’t think UMass will get close in this one but the team should finally get a win sometime soon.
