Appalachian State posted a 4-2 record over their first six games with losses to Miami-FL and Louisiana. Since then the Mountaineers have won six straight over Coastal Carolina, LA-Monroe, AR State, South Alabama, Troy and GA Southern.
In Saturday’s win over Georgia Southern, the Mountaineers scored 20 points in the second half on the way to a 27-3 win. QB Chase Brice finished on 235 yards with two touchdowns, and Thomas Hennigan caught three balls for 111 yards and a score.
Over on the Louisiana side, they lost to Texas in their opener but have been on a nice win streak since. In that stretch the Cajuns have beaten Nicholls State, Ohio, GA Southern, South Alabama, App State, AR State, Texas State, Georgia State, Troy, Liberty and LA-Monroe.
On Saturday versus LA-Monroe, the Cajuns had a 14-10 halftime lead and held on for the 21-16 win. QB Levi Lewis threw for 163 yards, and Montrell Johnson rushed for 62 yards off five carries.
App State is 7-1 ATS in their last eight on turf and 5-1 ATS in their last six overall. The Mountaineers are 5-1 ATS in their last six road games and 5-1 ATS in their last six conference games.
Meanwhile, the Cajuns are 5-2 ATS versus a team with a winning record and 4-1 ATS in their last five after an ATS loss. Louisiana is 2-5 ATS in their last seven games in December.
PICK: I’m going to try App State here. The Mountaineers are going to need to play better than they did the last time these teams met up, however. Appalachian State lost that one (October 12) 41-13, posting just 211 total yards to Louisiana’s 455. The Mountaineers came up empty 0-for-11 on third downs and had four turnovers.
Since that ugly game App State has shown much improvement and they’ve been scoring well so I think they’re ready for the rematch. Should be a fun one to watch.
