The Southern Miss Golden Eagles meet the FIU Panthers on Saturday in week 13 Conference USA college football action from Roberts Stadium. FIU is fresh off a matchup versus North Texas. In that one the Panthers fell in a blowout. As for the Eagles, they played LA Tech last Friday. Southern Miss ended up notching a 16-point win. FIU won their opener versus LIU this year, then hit a losing streak against Texas State, Texas Tech, Central Michigan, FAU, Charlotte, Western Kentucky, Marshall, Old Dominion and Middle Tennessee. That left the Panthers’ record at just 1-9 on the year.
In Saturday’s matchup against North Texas, FIU gave up 28 points in the second quarter alone in a bad 49-7 blowout loss. QB Max Bortenschlager finished 15-of-32 for 167 yards and a score, while Shaun Peterson rushed for 30 yards on five carries. Tyrese Chambers caught the TD and had 79 yards.
Over on the Southern Miss side, they started the year sketchy as well. Outside of a win over Grambling State, it was losses to South Alabama, Troy, Alabama, Rice, UTEP, UAB, Middle Tennessee, North Texas and UTSA over the first 10 outings.
In the Friday game versus LA Tech, Southern Miss posted a 21-9 halftime edge and went on to a 35-19 victory. Frank Gore posted 75 yards and two TDs passing, and Dajon Richard was tops in the run game with 120 yards on 22 carries.
The Panthers are 8-21 ATS in their last 29 overall and 2-8 ATS in their last 10 after an ATS loss. FIU is 1-4-1 ATS in their last six on turf.
Meanwhile, the Eagles are 4-1 ATS in their last five in November and 2-5 ATS in their last seven conference games. Southern Miss is 2-7 ATS in their last nine overall.
PICK: I’m going to try Southern Miss. They got a nice win over LA Tech in their last outing but it was a weird one. Four different players threw a pass, and the team coughed up three turnovers with just 4.9 yards per play and 3-of-10 on third downs. It’ll be interesting to see what they can do here.
As for FIU, they gave up 611 yards to North Texas in their last game and couldn’t really do much on offense either. The Panthers should bounce back and match up better here but I don’t think they’ll cover.
