The Trojans opened the year with a win over Nicholls State but then took a pair of consecutive losses versus Clemson and Memphis in the next pair. Troy would then hit a win streak over Buffalo, South Alabama, Texas State, LA-Monroe and Louisiana in the next five outings. More losses came versus Arkansas State and Old Dominion from there, giving the Trojans a 6-4 record through their first 10 games of the 2025 season.
Last weekend in the matchup with Georgia State, the Trojans posted points in each of the final three quarters (with double-digits in two of them) during a 31-19 win. QB Will Crowder was 27-of-43 for 361 yards and four scores while Tae Meadows carried 13 times for 35 yards. DJ Epps added 103 yards and two scores on eight receptions.

Over on the Southern Miss side, they went 2-2 over their first four games this year. The losses were to Mississippi State and LA Tech, sandwiched around wins over Jackson State and App State. The Eagles would then hit a win streak over Jacksonville State, Georgia Southern, Louisiana, LA-Monroe and Arkansas State in their next five ahead of a loss to Texas State. The result was a 7-3 run over the first 10 games of the season for Southern Miss.
Matched up against South Alabama on Saturday, the Eagles were down 35-14 by the start of the fourth quarter. Southern Miss made a game of it with 21 points from there but still lost a tough one 42-35 in the end. QB Braylon Braxton put up a 31-of-52 line for 400 yards, three scores and a pick. Jeffery Pittman led the rush on 41 yards and a score from 12 totes and Carl Chester had five catches for 128 yards and two more touchdowns.

Southern Miss vs Troy Prediction
I’ll lean toward Southern Miss, but this one’s a coin flip. Also, the Eagles have to recover from a bad loss to South Alabama last weekend. The main issue was the 263 rush yards allowed, which helped the Jags gather up 26 first downs and 5.8 yards per play. Southern Miss notched 400 pass yards on the other side but went just 4-of-13 on third-down tries alongside just 41 rush yards and 22:43 in time of possession. The Eagles have now lost consecutive games, so this is their last chance to make a real statement.
As for Troy, they did fairly well against a struggling Georgia State team last weekend, notching 423 yards, 5.6 yards per play and 11-of-20 on third downs. Troy did give up a lot on the other side: 516 yards and 26 first downs. That said, they also posted 3-of-14 on third downs allowed. The Trojans had lost consecutive games prior to that however, so they’ll need another big push in this one offensively. I don’t think Troy will quite get to cover territory, but you could make a case for it.
