The Troy Trojans and Marshall Thundering Herd clash Saturday in week 4 Sun Belt college football action from Troy University Veterans Memorial Stadium. Marshall is fresh off a weekend matchup versus Bowling Green. The Herd took a tough three-point overtime loss there. As for Troy, they played Appalachian State in their last outing. Marshall got off to a quick start against Norfolk State in their opener this year. The Herd posted 38 points in the first half during a 55-3 win. In game two versus Notre Dame, Marshall kept it going with an excellent 26-21 victory to move to 2-0.
Back on Saturday versus Bowling Green, Marshall gave up 21 points in the second quarter and eventually lost 34-31 in overtime. QB Henry Colombi finished with 338 yards, two scores and a pick. Khalan Laborn added 157 rush yards and two scores off 24 carries.
Over on the Troy side, they opened the 2022 season with a tough draw against Ole Miss. The Trojans couldn’t find much room there in a 28-10 loss. In their second outing versus Alabama A&M, Troy fared better in a 38-17 victory to move back to .500 on the year.
Last weekend against Appalachian State, the Trojans had a 21-14 lead going into halftime but ultimately couldn’t hold on in a 32-28 defeat. Gunnar Watson threw for 302 yards and an interception. DK Billingsley led the rushers with six carries for 36 yards and a score.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Marshall. The Herd had a rough game against a scrappy Bowling Green squad last weekend, but I think they’ll bounce back in this one. Marshall had the edge in a lot of categories, notching 23 first downs and 547 total yards. The three turnovers certainly hurt however, and Marshall couldn’t stop the Eagles when it counted.
As for Troy, they posted an admirable effort against Appalachian State themselves with 24 first downs and 348 total yards. I like Marshall to bounce back with a vengeance in this one however, and I don’t think the Trojans will be able to stay in range.
