The Troy Trojans meet the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns on Saturday in week 11 Sun Belt college football action from Troy University Veterans Memorial Stadium. Louisiana played Georgia State in their last outing on Thursday. The Cajuns ended up saving a four-point comeback win. As for the Trojans, they matched up against South Alabama in their last game. In that one Troy held on for a seven-point win. Check back all season long for free college football picks at Sports Chat Place.
Louisiana lost to Texas in their first game of the year, but then hit a nice win streak afterward. The Cajuns would take out Nicholls State, Ohio, Georgia Southern, South Alabama, Appalachian State, Arkansas State and Texas State over their next seven games.
Last Thursday versus Georgia State, the Cajuns couldn’t score in the first half and were down 10-7 heading into the fourth quarter but still powered out a 21-17 victory. QB Levi Lewis managed 287 yards with a TD and a pick, and Montrell Johnson rushed 17 times for 98 yards and two scores.
Over on the Troy side, they went 2-2 over their first four games this year with wins versus Southern U and Southern Miss alongside losses to Liberty and LA-Monroe. Another 2-2 run came afterward. The wins were against GA Southern and Texas State; the losses came versus South Carolina and Coastal Carolina.
In Saturday’s game versus South Alabama, Troy scored all their points in the first half but hung on for a 31-24 victory. QB Gunnar Watson put up 123 yards on 11-of-13 passing and BJ Smith led the rush on 47 yards from 12 carries. Jamontez Woods had a couple of rushing touchdowns on five carries as well.
The Cajuns are 5-11 ATS in the last 16 conference games and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 overall. Louisiana is 3-7 ATS versus a team with a winning record as well.
Meanwhile, the Trojans are 2-6 ATS in their last eight after an ATS win and 2-8 ATS in their last 10 after a straight-up win. Troy is also 1-5 ATS in their last six in November.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on Troy here. The Trojans couldn’t get much going offensively in the second half against South Alabama, but they were able to hang on for the big win. If Troy can get another good defensive effort like that in this game, they’ll be in business.
As for Louisiana, they didn’t play great football against Georgia State, but still came away with 430 total yards, 6.0 yards per play and 21 first downs in the comeback win thanks to a big fourth quarter. The Cajuns are going to need to sharpen up moving forward, and in the meantime I think the Trojans can get in on a cover.
