The Tulsa Golden Hurricane face UC Davis Aggies Thursday in week 1 20201 college football action from Chapman Stadium. This will be the first on-field activity of the 2021 season for both teams. UC Davis was able to play five spring games, posting a 3-2 record and a third-place finish in the Big Sky. As for the Hurricane, they got nine games in last year, finishing 6-3 and in second place in the AAC. Check back all season long for free college football picks at Sports Chat Place.

UC Davis managed to play five games between March 6 and April 3 this year. The victories came courtesy of Idaho, Cal Poly and Idaho State. The losses were to Weber State and Eastern Washington. The 3-2 mark left the Aggies in third place in the Big Sky Conference standings.

This year UC Davis head coach Dan Hawkins will enter his fifth season, flanked by first-year OC Cody Hawkins and Matt Coombs in his second year as DC. The Aggies are projected to finish in sixth place in the conference.

Over on the Tulsa side, they went 6-3 overall last year with a perfect 6-0 mark in American Athletic Conference play. That finish left the Hurricane in second place in the conference standings, just behind Cincinnati (who had an overall record of 9-1).

Tulsa went into the American Championship on a six-game win streak but fell to Cincinnati in a tough one 27-24 on December 19. The Hurricane got an invite to the Armed Forces Bowl versus Mississippi State, where they took another rough loss 28-26.

PICK: I’m likely going to stick with Tulsa. If there was a knock on the Hurricanes’ play last year it’s that the offense could have been better. Numbers-wise they were decent though, notching an average of 410 yards and 27 points per game. All five starters on the offensive line are expected to be back this year, and that experience should provide a nice boost on that side of the ball. The dynamic Shamari Brooks is back from a knee injury as well, and the Hurricanes are expecting good things from him. I like Tulsa to notch a convincing cover in this opener on the way to a nice season.
