The Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks meet the Georgia State Panthers Saturday in Sun Belt college football Week 6 action from Malone Stadium. Georgia State is coming off a game versus Appalachian State. In that one the Panthers fell in blowout fashion. As for the Warhawks, they played Coastal Carolina in their last game. LA-Monroe fell big in that one as well. Georgia State kicked off their year with a big loss to Army 43-10, then hit the wall against North Carolina in week two with another blowout defeat 59-17. The Panthers finally got in the win column 20-9 over Charlotte, but then lost the Auburn game 34-24.
In game five versus App State it was another big loss for the Panthers. Georgia State lost 45-16 to fall to 1-4 on the year. QB Cornelious Brown finished on 171 yards and two picks, while Marcus Carroll had 46 yards on nine carries to lead the rush.
Over on the LA-Monroe side, they got a tough draw against Kentucky in their first game, falling 45-10. The Warhawks picked it up in their next pair, however. LA-Monroe beat Jackson State 12-7 in game two, then took out Troy 29-16 in their third game.
Last weekend against Coastal Carolina, the Warhawks didn’t have much chance in a 59-6 blowout loss. QB Chandler Rogers had 100 yards and a pick on 9-of-17 passing, and was also the lead rusher with 11 carries for 40 yards.
The Panthers are 4-1 ATS in their last five road games and 16-6-1 ATS in their last 23 in October. GA State is 6-14-1 ATS in their last 21 after an ATS loss.
Meanwhile, the Warhawks are 16-33-2 ATS in their last 51 home games and 4-9 ATS versus a team with a losing record. ULM is 7-21-1 ATS in their last 29 on grass.
PICK: I’m going to try Georgia State, but probably staying away. The Panthers are coming off a rough matchup, giving up 502 total yards and points in every quarter. If there’s good news, it’s that Georgia State had a decent 380 total yards themselves with 21 first downs.
As for the Warhawks, there wasn’t much chance of them keeping up with the Chanticleers on Saturday, and they gave up 557 yards, 8.4 yards per play and 28 first downs during the game. LA-Monroe found just 10 first downs and had 3.7 yards per play themselves.
These teams should both match up better this week, but I think the Panthers still have the advantage on a cover.
