The UMass Minutemen meet the Rhode Island Rams Saturday in week 10 college football action from McGuirk Alumni Stadium. Rhode Island is coming off a matchup versus Maine. In that one the Rams lost by 21 points. As for UMass, they played Liberty last weekend. The Minutemen ended up falling big for yet another loss. Rhode Island posted a 5-0 record over their first five games this year. The Rams took out Bryant, Albany, Brown, Stony Brook and Delaware in succession during that span. Losses to Towson and Villanova put a stop to Rhode Island’s streak, however.
Last weekend versus Maine, the Rams gave up points in every quarter (and double-digit points in three of four) during a 45-24 defeat. QB Kasim Hill put up 177 yards and three touchdowns. Jaylen Smith led the rush with 46 yards, and Paul Woods had 102 yards receiving with a score.
Over on the UMass side, their year began at 0-5 after losses to Pittsburgh, Boston College, Eastern Michigan, Coastal Carolina and Toledo. The Minutemen finally got a win over UConn, but then lost big to Florida State in the next game.
In the Liberty matchup, the Minutemen were behind 41-3 at halftime and limped to a 62-17 defeat. QB Brady Olson had 74 yards, one TD and one pick, while Ellis Merriweather had 149 yards off 24 carries. Rico Arnold added a 30-yard TD catch as well.
PICK: I’m probably going to take Rhode Island, but staying away. Both these teams are coming off ugly outings, and I think the Rams have a better chance at bouncing back here. UMass coughed up a whopping 604 yards to Liberty, along with 26 first downs and 9.6 yards per play. The offense produced just 284 yards (74 passing), 15 first downs and two turnovers. I think UMass will perform better in this one, but it’s probably the Rams’ cover if they play well.
