UMass and Temple meet Saturday in college football action from McGuirk Alumni Stadium. Here’s a UMass Minutemen vs Temple Owls prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best UMass vs Temple pick.

Does Temple Bounce Back?

Temple has had some terrible seasons the last few seasons, but they believe they finally have the right guy in charge. KC Keeler has been brought in, and he is known for one thing, winning games. Keeler found so much success at Sam Houston State, including winning the FCS championship. Temple hasn’t named a starter yet for this game, and it might not be announced before the game even starts. Gevani McCoy and Evan Simon are both battling, and Keeler has suggested that both guys could end up playing in this game. Whoever plays in this game, is going to need to play a clean game, and not create turnovers.

On defense, there were all kinds of issues last season, and it’s going to be a work in progress. Last season there wasn’t any pass rush, and although some new players have come in, it could be a work in progress. Jalen Stewart has been brought in from UMass, and he’s probably going to be an anchor of the defense.

Why Temple will beat UMass

  • Massachusetts has lost each of its last 10 games as a home underdog.
  • Temple has won each of its last nine games as a favorite.
  • The favorite has covered the spread in five of Temple’s last six games.
  • Massachusetts has failed to cover the spread in each of its last three games against teams from Pennsylvania.

UMass to the MAC

UMass is back in the MAC conference and the hope is this is the year that they can finally start winning consistently. It starts with the quarterback and offensive coordinator, and they believe they finally have their duo. Mike Bajakian has been brought in as the offensive coordinator and he is known for his strong work with quarterbacks. Grant Jordan has been brought in from Yale, and he is good. He only had three interceptions last year, and not turning the ball over is going to be a major key this season. One of the big questions for UMass is about the running game. The top running backs from last season are gone, but they did bring in Rocko Griffin who ran for almost 500 yards in 2023.

On defense, they hope this team is going to be much improved. One of the big issues last season was the lack of creating takeaways. This defense is probably going to still have some major issues this season, but creating a few more takeaways is going to be a key here for this team.

Why UMass Will Beat Temple

  • Temple has lost each of its last 18 road games against non-AP-ranked teams.
  • Temple has failed to cover the spread in eight of its last nine season openers.
  • The home team has covered the spread in 10 of Temple’s last 12 games.

Umass vs Temple Prediction

UMass and Temple are going to be involved in a lower scoring game here. I am not sold on either of the quarterback rooms here, and there are going to be some growing pains for both these teams. Temple has two quality quarterbacks, but I have a feeling we are going to see both of them here, which is going to cause problems with both of them as they try to get into a rhythm. This UMass offense is also going to really struggle to move the ball, and they that will make this Temple offense look really impressive. Neither team is breaking 20 points here. Back the under to cash.
