The Vanderbilt Commodores and the Virginia Tech Hokies meet Saturday in college football action from Lane Stadium. Here’s a Virginia Tech vs Vanderbilt prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best Virginia Tech vs Vanderbilt pick.

Vanderbilt Commodores Betting Preview

Even with a rough run in conference play, the Commodores were able to put together a pretty solid overall season in 2024. Vanderbilt finished 7-6 overall but went just 3-5 in the Southeastern Conference. That effort would put the Commodores ahead of only Oklahoma, Auburn, Kentucky and Mississippi State in the standings. Still, Vanderbilt bagged an unbelievable 40-35 win over Alabama on October 5, their first-ever win over an AP top 5 opponent. Losses to South Carolina, LSU and Tennessee down the stretch put a damper on things, but Vanderbilt recovered with a Birmingham Bowl win over Georgia Tech on December 27 by a score of 35-27.

In their opening matchup of the 2025 season versus Charleston Southern last weekend, the Commodores didn’t have too much trouble. Vanderbilt scored 14 points in each of the first two quarters (and 17 combined in the last two), holding the Bucs to just a field goal in a 45-3 blowout victory. QB Diego Pavia went a nice 20-of-25 for 275 yards and three touchdowns, while Sedrick Alexander carried 12 times for 83 yards to lead the rushers. Eli Stowers caught four passes for 86 yards as the top receiver in the victory.

Virginia Tech Hokies Betting Preview

Over on the Virginia Tech side, they notched a pretty pedestrian campaign in 2024. The Hokies went 6-7 overall in head coach Brent Pry’s third season at the helm, logging a 4-4 run in a pretty crowded Atlantic Coast Conference. That would give Virginia Tech a finish behind SMU, Clemson, Miami, Syracuse, Louisville, Georgia Tech and Duke in the standings, near the middle of the pack overall. In their Duke’s Mayo Bowl appearance versus Minnesota on January 3, Virginia Tech took a 24-10 defeat, their fourth loss in a five-game span at the end of the year.

Matched up against South Carolina in their opener last weekend, the Hokies were able to keep pace for most of the game. Virginia Tech went into the final quarter with a 10-8 deficit but couldn’t keep pace in an eventual loss 24-11. Kyron Drones had a rough day on 15-of-35 passing with 221 yards and two picks. Donavon Green led the receivers with three catches for 94 yards, and Marcellous Hawkins carried 15 times for 58 yards to top the rushing attack.

Virginia Tech vs Vanderbilt Prediction

I’ll stick with Vanderbilt. The Commodores did very well in pretty much every facet last weekend, blitzing an admittedly overmatched Charleston Southern team during a blowout. Vanderbilt’s offense accounted for 481 total yards (280 passing), 8.2 yards per play, 25 first downs, no penalties and a 6-of-9 rate on third-down conversions. On defense the Commodores were even better, logging 135 yards (88 passing), 2.9 yards per play, seven first downs, 3-of-13 on third-down tries and two takeaways. The only (relatively minor) blemish during Vanderbilt’s big win was the seven penalties for 60 yards. Granted, a road game versus Virginia Tech this weekend will mark a big uptick in competition, but I think Vanderbilt can take it if all goes well.

Speaking of the Hokies, on Sunday they got into some rough spots with a tepid offensive attack but the team was still close late in the game versus South Carolina. Virginia Tech had a couple of interceptions and went just 8-of-18 on third-down tries. That said, the defense was pretty stout overall with 16 first downs and 4-of-12 on third downs allowed—and no takeaways. The Hokies should match up better here but I like Vanderbilt cover/win-wise. It’ll be a good one.
