The Virginia Cavaliers and Pittsburgh Panthers meet Saturday in week 11 ACC college football action from Scott Stadium. Pitt played Syracuse in their last game. The Panthers would go on to win by 10 points. As for Virginia, they’re coming off a game versus North Carolina. In that one the Cavaliers lost by three points. Pittsburgh’s year began on a 3-1 run with wins over West Virginia, Western Michigan and Rhode Island alongside a loss to Tennessee in OT. The Panthers went 1-3 over their next four games with losses to Georgia Tech, Louisville and North Carolina.
In the Syracuse game, Pittsburgh took a 17-6 lead into the final quarter. The Panthers cruised from there to a nice 19-9 victory. Quarterback Kedon Slovis put up 176 yards and one pick. Rodney Hammond added 124 yards with a TD on 28 carries.
Over on the Virginia side, they won two of their first three games versus Richmond and Old Dominion. The Cavaliers then hit a losing streak versus Syracuse, Duke and Louisville before a win over Georgia Tech and another loss to Miami-FL.
Matched up against North Carolina, the Cavaliers managed to put up a touchdown in each quarter. That wasn’t enough in a 31-28 defeat. QB Brennan Armstrong finished with 232 yards and a pick, while Mike Hollins led the rush with 75 yards on 16 carries.
Pitt is 4-1 ATS in their last five in November and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 road games. The Panthers are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 overall.
Meanwhile, the Cavs are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 conference games and 6-2 ATS in their last eight in November. Virginia is 25-11 ATS versus a team with a winning record.
PICK: I like Pittsburgh in this one. The Panthers are coming off a very impressive win over a great Syracuse team. Pitt held the Orange to just 145 total yards, 3.0 yards per play, 10 first downs and 3-of-14 on third-down tries. The Panthers did well on the other side despite two turnovers and nine penalties.
As for Virginia, they stayed right with North Carolina in their last game but couldn’t pull out the win. The Cavs put up 418 total yards with 25 first downs in a decent offensive display, but it’s not going to get any easier this week.
