The Kansas State Wildcats and South Dakota Coyotes do battle Saturday afternoon in week 1 college football action from Bill Snyder Family Stadium. South Dakota is coming off a 7-5 overall record in 2021, ultimately falling in the FCS Playoffs First Round. As for Kansas State, they went 8-5 overall last year and bagged a win in the Texas Bowl. South Dakota did fairly well in a competitive Missouri Valley Football Conference last season, going 5-3 there and 7-5 overall. The Coyotes would finish in fourth place in the standings, behind North Dakota State, Missouri State and Southern Illinois.
The Coyotes’ regular season in 2021 was bookended with losses to Kansas and North Dakota State. Between those games South Dakota posted seven wins in nine games. In the FCS Playoffs First Round however, the Coyotes fell to Southern Illinois 22-10 to end their campaign.
Over on the Kansas State side, they went 8-5 overall last year and posted a 4-5 record in a tough Big 12. That result would put the Wildcats in fifth place in the conference standings, behind Oklahoma State, Baylor, Oklahoma and Iowa State.
Kansas State had a three-game losing streak to Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and Iowa State in the middle of the 2021 season, but otherwise did pretty well until their final pair of regular season outings. The Wildcats earned a trip to the Texas Bowl, where they dispatched LSU 42-20.
PICK: I’m probably going to try Kansas State, but staying away. This should be a pretty fun matchup. Kansas State is poised to make some progress in the tricky Big 12 this year if all goes well. They’ve lost three starters on the offensive line, but if the Wildcats can get that interior shored up they’ll see great things from the running game. Deuce Vaughn should have another great year, and QB Adrian Martinez will rumble for some yards as well. Defensively there are some losses for Kansas State as well, but they should have enough talent to stay in cover range here. Should be a fun game.
