The Buffalo Bulls and Holy Cross Crusaders do battle Saturday in week 2 college football action from UB Stadium. Holy Cross is coming off a matchup versus Merrimack. In that game, the Crusaders managed a 14-point win. As for Buffalo, they played Maryland in Week 1 activity. The Bulls would go on to fall by 21 points. Holy Cross had a pretty good run in 2021. The Crusaders managed a 10-3 overall record and went a clean 6-0 in Patriot League play for a conference championship. Holy Cross would eventually fall in the NCAA Division I Second Round to Villanova, however.

In their 2022 season opener versus Merrimack, the Crusaders carried a 19-10 lead into the second half and ended up with a 31-17 win. QB Matthew Sluka finished with 242 yards, two touchdowns and a pick while also leading the rush with 102 yards and a score on 13 totes.

Over on the Buffalo side, they had a rough campaign last season. The Bulls managed a 4-8 overall record and went just 2-6 in MAC play. The Bulls landed just one spot out of the basement in the East Division with that effort, ahead of only Akron at 1-7.

In the matchup versus Maryland, Buffalo gave up points in every quarter during a 31-10 loss. QB Cole Snider managed 160 yards on 18-of-35 passing, and Justin Marshall led the receivers on 52 yards from four grabs. Ron Cook topped the rush with 33 yards off 15 carries.

PICK: I’m probably staying with Buffalo here but not touching it. The Bulls were overmatched versus Maryland but still came up with pretty solid numbers in some respects (zero turnovers, 18 first downs, 32:37 time of possession, only three penalties). I imagine they’ll look better in this one against a more comparable squad.
As for Holy Cross, they did well statistically in their first outing with 502 yards, 28 first downs and 34:33 in time of possession. The Crusaders will likely get a closer matchup in this one however, and they won’t have so much free rein on the field.
