Boise State managed to go 7-5 overall last season and 5-3 in the Mountain West. That record was good enough for third place in the Mountain Division behind Utah State and Air Force. The Broncos were scheduled to play the Arizona Bowl but had to withdraw due to virus issues.
In their opener versus Oregon State, Boise State was down 24-0 after the first half and limped to a 34-17 loss. QBs Taylor Green and Hank Bachmeier combined for 185 yards and three interceptions. Green also led the rush with 102 yards and two scores.
Over on the New Mexico side, they had a rough campaign in 2021. The Lobos went just 3-9 overall and 1-7 in the Mountain West. That result left New Mexico in last place in the Mountain Division and last place overall in the conference.
This past weekend versus Maine, New Mexico scored 21 points in the second half alone during a 41-0 blowout victory. QB Miles Kendrick put up 170 yards, two TDs and two picks, while Sherod White rushed for 58 yards and two scores on 13 carries.
PICK: I’m going to stay with New Mexico. The Lobos put up a clinic in their first outing versus an overmatched Maine squad, rolling to 437 total yards, 27 first downs, 6.0 yards per play and a 9-of-12 mark on third-down tries. New Mexico posted nine penalties and a couple of interceptions but otherwise they were stellar. As for the Broncos, they had an ugly game with the five turnovers and 4.6 yards per play. Boise State is better than that, but they’ll need to get things together quickly. I think New Mexico can keep pace in the meantime.
