The San Diego State Aztecs and Idaho State Bengals clash Saturday in week 2 college football action from Snapdragon Stadium. Idaho State is 0-1 so far after an opener loss to UNLV. Idaho State didn’t have too many positives in their 2021 campaign. The Bengals finished just 1-10 overall and 1-7 in Big Sky Conference play. That would put Idaho State all the way down in second-to-last place in the standings, ahead of only the winless Southern Utah.
The Bengals played their first game on August 27 versus UNLV. Idaho State ended up with a 52-21 defeat in that one after allowing 35 second-quarter points. QB Tyler Vander Waal managed 130 yards, one TD and one pick, while Xavier Guillroy caught four balls for 73 yards and a score.
Over on the San Diego State side, they bagged a 12-2 overall record last year with a 7-1 run in Mountain West games. The Aztecs finished first in the West Division but lost the championship game to Utah State. San Diego State would ultimately beat UTSA in the Frisco Bowl to bounce back, though.
Matched up against Arizona back on Saturday, the Aztecs fell behind 24-10 at halftime and couldn’t crawl out of the hole in a 38-20 loss. QB Braxton Burmeister managed 51 yards, one TD and one pick. Cam Davis led the rush with 39 yards, and Kenan Criston caught two balls for 19 yards.
PICK: I’m probably staying with San Diego State but I’m not going near this one. The Aztecs couldn’t do much of anything against Arizona, posting just 232 total yards, 62 pass yards and a 2-of-11 run on third-down tries. San Diego State lost by 18 and it shouldn’t even have been that close. The matchup in game two will obviously be more favorable but it’s hard to trust SDSU after a rough game like that.
As for Idaho State, they got a little extra time to think about that rough loss to UNLV. The Bengals had just 241 yards, 13 first downs and 3.6 yards per play, but they were pretty overmatched anyway. Idaho State should look better here, but I don’t think they’ll cover. I could probably go either way on this one, though.
