The Appalachian State Mountaineers and Troy Trojans do battle Saturday in week 3 college football action from Kidd Brewer Stadium. Troy is fresh off a meeting with Alabama A&M. In that game the Trojans posted a sizable win. As for App State, they played Texas A&M over the weekend. The Mountaineers ended up taking a thrilling upset victory to get back to .500 on the year. Troy had a tough draw against Ole Miss in their first game of the year, eventually falling 28-10. The Trojans’ Gunnar Watson finished with 275 yards, one TD and one INT, and Kimani Vidal added 48 yards off 12 carries. Jabre Barber posted 60 yards from five catches as well.
In game two versus Alabama A&M, the Trojans scored 21 points in the third quarter alone during a 38-17 victory. QB Gunnar Watson posted 351 pass yards with four touchdowns and two picks. Jabre Barber led the receivers on 105 yards and a TD off five catches.
Over on the Appalachian State side, they played a wild opener versus North Carolina. The Mountaineers outscored the Tar Heels 40-22 in the final quarter but it wasn’t enough in a 63-61 loss. QB Chase Brice went off for 361 yards and six scores; Nate Noel led the rush on 116 yards and two TDs of his own.
Matched up against Texas A&M on Saturday, the Mountaineers outscored the Aggies 10-7 in the second half to complete a wild 17-14 upset victory. QB Chase Brise managed 134 yards and a score, and Camerun Peoples led the rush with 19 carries for 112 yards.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on Appalachian State, so long as the team doesn’t have a hangover from last weekend’s huge victory. The Mountaineers were great in that matchup, logging 315 total yards, 22 first downs, zero turnovers and a 41:29 time of possession. App State held the Aggies to just 186 total yards, nine first downs and 2-of-8 on third-down tries.
As for Troy, they were able to get back on track in game two after the tough first outing. I like the Trojans to hang around in this one, and they could cause some trouble for App State if the Mountaineers aren’t on point.
