Maine had a rough 2022 opener versus New Mexico. The Bears gave up 21 points in the second quarter alone on the way to a 41-0 blowout loss. QB Joe Fagnano managed 96 yards and a pick, while Tavion Banks led the rush on 22 yards from five carries.

In game two versus Colgate, Maine scored 15 points in the final quarter but couldn’t come back in a 21-18 loss. Fagnano managed 246 yards with a TD, and Elijah Barnwell carried 17 times for 66 yards. Shawn Bowman posted four catches for 54 yards as well.

Over on the Boston College side, they nearly came back from a 14-6 halftime deficit versus Rutgers in their opener, but ended up losing 22-21. QB Phil Jurkovec logged 283 yards with three scores and two picks. Zay Flowers caught 10 balls for 117 yards and a pair of TDs.

Matched up against Virginia Tech, the Eagles gave up points in every quarter during a 27-10 loss. Jurkovec finished with 135 yards, one TD and one INT. Pat Garwo led the rush on just 15 yards from 10 carries, and Flowers had four catches for 79 yards.

PICK: I’m likely going to stay with Boston College but the line is a little too thick to mess with. There’s not much to get excited about here though; both teams have been struggling. The Eagles managed just 155 total yards versus Virginia Tech—only four of those coming on the ground. The outcome was a tepid 2.6 yards per play, 11 first downs and 2-of-15 on third-down tries. As for Maine, they showed some life in the final quarter versus Colgate but couldn’t overcome the hole they’d dug for themselves. All things considered this is probably going to be another loss for the Black Bears.
