The Iowa State Cyclones and Ohio Bobcats clash Saturday in week 3 college football action from Jack Trice Stadium. Ohio is fresh off a matchup versus Penn State. The Bobcats ended up losing in a blowout. As for Iowa State, they played Iowa in their last outing. In that one the Cyclones eked out a three-point win. Ohio played a dramatic game in their opener this year, ultimately holding on for a 41-38 win over Florida Atlantic. QB Kurtis Rourke put up four TDs with 345 yards, and Sieh Bangura rushed for 114 yards on 23 carries. James Bostic led the receivers on 136 yards and a TD from six grabs.
Matched up against Penn State in game two, Ohio gave up points in every quarter during a 46-10 blowout loss. Rourke managed 119 yards on 14-of-30 passing, and also led the rush with 29 yards. Bangura managed two catches for 35 yards as well.
Over on the Iowa State side, they didn’t have a ton of issues in their opener this year, scoring in every quarter on the way to a 42-10 win over Southeast Missouri State. The Cyclones’ Hunter Dekkers put up 293 pass yards with four TDs, and Jirehl Brock carried 16 times for 104 yards and a score.
In game two versus Iowa, the Cyclones kept their run going with a great performance versus Iowa. Iowa State posted their lone TD in the fourth quarter during a 10-7 victory. QB Dekers threw for 184 yards, one score and two picks; Xavier Hutchinson caught the TD among his 11 grabs and 98 yards.
PICK: I’m going with Iowa State. The Cyclones posted a stellar defensive effort against Iowa in their last game, giving up just 150 total yards and 2.9 yards per play. The offense had their issues—including three turnovers—but the 313 total yards, 21 first downs and 38:15 mark in time of possession were enough to get the rivalry win.
As for Ohio, they couldn’t contain Penn State in their last outing, giving up 572 total yards and 27 first downs. The Bobcats may be able to keep pace in this one for a while, but I like Iowa State to ultimately take the cover and continue rolling along.
