Miami-OH got a tough draw in their opener versus Kentucky, and the outcome was a 37-13 loss. In game two, the RedHawks got their turn to blow out an overmatched team, taking out Robert Morris 31-14. Miami-OH scored 24 points in the first half alone during that win.
Back on Saturday versus Cincinnati, the RedHawks gave up points in every quarter on the way to a 38-17 loss. QB Aveon Smith managed 116 yards, two scores and a pick. Kevin Davis led the rush with 30 yards, and Mac Hippenhammer caught four balls for 62 yards and a TD.
Over on the Northwestern side, they kicked off the season with a matchup versus Nebraska. The Wildcats secured a nice 31-28 win in that one. Game two was a different story for Northwestern however, as they ended up falling 31-23 to Duke.
Matched up against Southern Illinois in game three, the Wildcats held a 14-14 tie coming into the third quarter but eventually lost 31-24. QB Ryan Hilinski finished with 213 yards, one TD and two picks. Evan Hull led the rush with 124 yards and a score off 25 carries.
The RedHawks are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 after a straight-up loss and 1-4 ATS in their last five in September. Miami-OH is 1-5 ATS in their last six after an ATS win.
Meanwhile, the Wildcats are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 versus the MAC and 1-5 ATS in their last six overall. Northwestern is 1-5 ATS in their last six in September.
PICK: I’m probably staying with Northwestern but not going near it. I’m finding it difficult to trust the Wildcats after Saturday’s dud of a game. Northwestern out-gained Southern Illinois 380-352 and had 24 first downs. The Wildcats shot themselves in the foot with four turnovers however, and they went a sketchy 6-of-17 on third-down tries. Northwestern needs to be better in winnable games.
As for Miami-OH, they posted just 183 yards and 13 first downs in their loss to Cincinnati so the RedHawks certainly have some things to work on as well. With a good bounce-back I could even see Miami-OH keeping pace here but I’m not going to mess with it regardless.
