In that one the Flames won by nine points. As for Old Dominion, they played Arkansas State on Saturday. The Monarchs ended up eking out a three-point win. Liberty opened up the year in a tough matchup versus Southern Miss, eventually taking an overtime win 29-27. Game two was another win for the Flames 21-14 over UAB. In the Wake Forest matchup, Liberty took a tough 37-36 loss for their first defeat.
On Saturday versus Akron, Liberty got off to a 14-3 first-half lead and didn’t look back in a 21-12 win. QB Jonathan Bennett put up 152 yards, two scores and an interception. Dae Dae Hunter added 18 carries for 118 yards and a touchdown rushing.
Over on the Old Dominion side, they opened up the year with a strong showing against Virginia Tech in a 20-17 win. The Monarchs would take a loss in game two 39-21 versus East Carolina, and another one 16-14 against Virginia in their third outing of the year.
In the Arkansas State game, the Monarchs were down 12-0 at the break but scored all their points in the second half in a 29-26 win. QB Hayden Wolff posted 279 yards with two TDs and Keshawn Wicks rushed for 36 yards and a score on nine carries.
PICK: I might try Liberty here. The Flames did a balanced job on offense in their win over the Zips this past weekend, posting 152 pass yards and 157 rush yards for a total of 309. Liberty gave up a couple of turnovers and committed eight penalties however, so they’ve got some work to do in practice this week.
As for Old Dominion, they put up a nice comeback win over Arkansas State but it wasn’t pretty. The Monarchs had just 12 first downs and went 3-of-14 on third-down tries. This one’s probably going to be another tough game for ODU, and I don’t think they’ll cover.
