UNLV kicked off their 2022 season with a 52-21 win over Idaho State, but then the team lost 20-14 to California. The Rebels hit a win streak after that with victories versus North Texas 58-27, Utah State 34-24 and New Mexico 31-20 before a loss to San Jose State 40-7.
Matched up against Air Force, the Rebels gave up 14 points in each of the first three quarters. UNLV would ultimately limp to a 42-7 loss. QB Cameron Friel posted 108 yards with a TD and a pick. Courtney Reese led the rush with 37 yards on five carries.
Over on the Notre Dame side, they lost their first two games of the year 21-10 versus Ohio State and 26-21 to Marshall. The Irish would then go on to take out California 24-17, North Carolina 45-32 and BYU 28-20 in a series of wins as they righted the ship.
In the Stanford game, the Irish gave up points in every quarter (and couldn’t score in the first half) during a 16-14 loss. Quarterback Drew Pyne finished with 151 yards and a TD. Logan Diggs and Audric Estime led the rush, each with 57 yards (Estime also scored).
PICK: I’m probably staying with Notre Dame. I doubt I’m going near this one, though; both teams are coming off rough outings. The Irish posted a tepid 301 total yards, 16 first downs and a 3-of-12 rate on third-down tries in their loss versus Stanford. Notre Dame is a better offensive team than that however; they should bounce back in this matchup.
As for UNLV, they mustered just 179 total yards in their loss to Air Force. The Rebels coughed up four turnovers and allowed a whopping 406 rush yards to the Falcons. UNLV is a better team than that, but I don’t think they’ll cover here.
