The Wyoming Cowboys meet the Montana State Bobcats Saturday in week 1 college football action from War Memorial Stadium. This will be the first game of the 2021 season for both teams. Montana State hasn’t been on the field since late 2019, as they opted out of football activities last year. As for the Cowboys, they managed to play a half-dozen games last fall, finishing 2-4 in that stretch. Check back all season long for free college football picks at Sports Chat Place.

Montana State last played a meaningful football game way back on December 21, 2019—a 42-14 blowout loss to North Dakota State in the FCS Playoffs Semifinals. That defeat capped off a 11-4 run for the Bobcats, who finished fourth in the Big Sky with a 6-2 conference mark.

This year marks a new coaching staff for the Bobcats. They’ll be helmed by head coach Brent Vigen, who brings along offensive coordinator Taylor Housewright and Freddie Banks as defensive coordinator.

Over on the Wyoming side, they were able to play six games last fall, going 2-4 to finish in the bottom half of the Mountain West Conference rankings. The Cowboys started out 2-2, but fell in a couple of tough games down the stretch to New Mexico and Boise State.

Head coach Craig Bohl returns to the Cowboys sideline, joined by second-year DC Jay Sawvel. Wyoming gets a new offensive coordinator this season in Tim Polasek. He’ll try to get the passing game moving in the 2021 season.

Check back for the current trends in this matchup once they’re released.

PICK: I’m going to stick with Wyoming. The major question mark facing the Cowboys offense this year is the passing game; the team led the Mountain West in yards per completion last year, but there weren’t many completions to go around. The good news is that Wyoming gets their top three targets back. The better news is that the Cowboys should have a great ground game with the likes of Xazavian Valladay and Trey Smith in the mix.

As for Montana State, it’s hard to know what to expect after the long layoff and turnover. The team is retaining a lot of talent from 2019 however, so we could see some nice results from the Bobcats this year if all goes well. Still, I think Wyoming has it in the opener.
