Draftkings Best WNBA Showdown Picks: Mystics vs. Mercury 9/5/24

Draftkings picks and predictions for this evening's Mystics vs. Mercury matchup.

Washington Mystics vs. Phoenix Mercury
September 5, 2024 10:00 pm EDT

The WNBA presents a matchup between the Washington Mystics and Phoenix Mercury. Let’s take a look at this game from a Draftkings perspective.

Before we dive into the Washington Mystics vs. Phoenix Mercury game let’s review the rules for the Draftkings single game showdown contest.

Draftkings Single Game Showdown Contest Rules

You have $50,000 to utilize on five players from either team. However, one of those players will be designated as your team captain. The captain accumulates 1.5 times the standard fantasy points. Additionally, the captain is 1.5 times the standard cost of the flex position.

The remaining four players in your lineup will receive the standard fantasy points. Having stated that, it is highly important for you to identify the correct player for your captain position if you hope to win a large field DFS GPP (guaranteed prize pool) showdown contest.

If you have additional questions regarding the rules for the single game showdown contest, I recommend that you check out the Draftkings website for more details.

*I recommend that all readers review the starting lineups for both teams prior to setting your DFS lineup for this one game slate.

Here are my Draftkings picks for tonight’s Washington Mystics Lynx vs. Phoenix Mercury matchup.

Draftkings WNBA Showdown Picks

Captain-Kahleah Copper, Guard, Phoenix Mercury $9,200

Phoenix guard Kahleah Copper has been one of the few bright spots for a Phoenix Mercury team that has struggled at times this season. Let’s take a look at Copper’s recent game data to better shed light on my previous statement.

In the 34 games that Kahleah Copper has played for the Phoenix Mercury in the 2024 WNBA regular season, Copper has averaged a robust 23.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and one steal a game.

More recently, in the Phoenix Mercury’s 74-66 win over the Atlanta Dream two days ago, Phoenix guard Kahleah Copper played exceptionally well from a statistical perspective. More specifically, Kahleah Copper tallied a whopping 28 points, three rebounds, and four assists in 32 minutes played in the Mercury’s victory over the Atlanta Dream.

Looking closer at the data just noted, in the Phoenix Mercury’s win over the Atlanta Dream just noted, Phoenix guard Kahleah Copper accumulated 37.3 Draftkings points.

In my opinion, selecting the correct captain is of the highest importance if you hope to win a large field GPP (guaranteed prize pool) Draftkings contest. Having stated that, I think that talented Phoenix guard Kahleah Copper is a great play at captain for this one game WNBA DFS Draftkings slate.

Flex Plays

Ariel Atkins, Guard, Washington Mystics $8,000

Washington guard Ariel Atkins has been the leader in the backcourt that the Washington Mystics have needed to win games this season.

In the 33 games that Ariel Atkins has played for the Washington Mystics in 2024, Atkins has averaged 15.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.5 steals, and 0.5 blocks a game.

I also like Ariel Atkins’s matchup this evening. Why? Atkins will face a Phoenix Mercury team that has been vulnerable on the defensive side of the basketball this season. Through 33 games played in the 2024 WNBA regular season, the Phoenix Mercury are currently ranked ninth in total team defensive rating (104.4), 12th in defensive rebound percentage (68%), and 12th in total opponent second chance points allowed a game (12.6). Clearly, the defensive data just presented tells us that the Phoenix Mercury are not a good defensive basketball team. After all, numbers don’t lie.

Additional players I like to play well this evening (Draftkings price noted): Diana Taurasi, Guard (Phoenix Mercury) $8,200: Emily Engstler, Forward (Washington Mystics) $6,800: Sophie Cunningham, Guard (Phoenix Mercury) $6,200.
