Chicago White Sox vs. Detroit Tigers – 8/20/20 MLB Pick, Odds, and Prediction

2020-08-20 14:10:00 EDT

The Detroit Tigers and the Chicago White Sox meet in an AL Central division matchup from Guaranteed Rate Field on Thursday.

The Detroit Tigers will look to rebound from a 5-3 loss to the White Sox on Wednesday. Jeimer Candelario accounted for all three Tiger runs by going 2 for 4 with a home run and a double while Jonathan Schoop, Victor Reyes and JaCoby Jones each had a base hit as Detroit had just five hits as a team in the losing effort. Casey Mize gave up three runs on seven hits while striking out seven over 4.1 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Gregory Soto took the loss, falling to 0-1 in relief on the year. Spencer Turnbull will start here and is 2-1 with a 2.78 ERA and 21 strikeouts this season. In his career, Turnbull is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA and 14 strikeouts against the White Sox.

The Chicago White Sox will look to build off of their victory over the Tigers on Thursday. Edwin Encarnacion led the charge, belting a pair of solo home runs while Jose Abreu went 2 for 4 with a solo homer as well. Tim Anderson and Yoan Moncada added an RBI each to cap off Chicago’s scoring as a team in the win while Nomar Mazara and Zach Collins each had a double to finish off Chicago’s offense. Dane Dunning gave up three runs on five hits while striking out seven over 4.1 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Evan Marshall got the win to improve to 1-1 while Alex Colome closed things out for his 6th save of the year. Lucas Giolito will start here and is 1-2 with a 4.88 ERA and 32 strikeouts this season. In his career, Giolito is 4-2 with a 4.93 ERA and 38 strikeouts against Detroit.

Detroit is 38-106 in their last 144 games overall and 10-49 in their last 59 games against a team with a winning record while the under is 10-3 in their last 13 games as a road underdog. Chicago is 3-7 in their last 10 home games and 5-2 in their last 7 games overall while the under is 9-4-1 in their last 14 games against a team with a losing record. Detroit is 0-4 in the last 4 meetings between these two teams.

The White Sox have had the Tigers’ number in this series and it goes without question that the Tigers are in a slump right now after their 8th straight loss on Wednesday. However, Turnbull’s been Detroit’s stopper on the mound so far this year as he’s easily been their best starter and Giolito’s coming off of a start in which he allowed five runs, four earned in just five innings of work. I think if the Tigers are going to get a win to snap the skid, Turnbull’s the guy to get it done. I’ll lean towards the Tigers and the plus money as my free play for this game, but my stronger pick is on the side and that’s available as a premium pick that you can find here.
