Detroit Tigers vs. Kansas City Royals – 9/16/20 MLB Pick, Odds, and Prediction

2020-09-16 19:10:00 EDT

The Kansas City Royals and the Detroit Tigers meet Wednesday in MLB action from Comerica Park.

This will be the second installment of a quick two-game series between these MLB teams this week. In the opener on Tuesday, Detroit jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings and stayed dominant during a 6-0 shutout victory to take the early lead in this set. The Royals could only muster five hits in the Tuesday loss, and coughed up 14 hits to Detroit. Kansas City’s Whit Merrifield and Salvador Perez accounted for four of the team’s hits. Starting pitcher Jakob Junis went 2.1 innings with five earned on seven hits in the defeat.

For the Wednesday starting pitcher job, the Royals will send out Brady Singer. In his nine starts this season, Singer is 2-4 with a 4.66 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 48.1 innings of work. This is the 24-year-old Singer’s first season of MLB activity.

Over on the Tigers’ side, starter Matthew Boyd posted 5.2 innings in the win Tuesday, with two hits, one earned and four walks. Jeimer Candelario went 3-for-5 with two runs, and Willi Castro had three hits, two runs and a solo homer.

For the Wednesday starting role, Detroit will go with Tarik Skubal. The 23-year-old Skubal has five starts under his belt in his rookie MLB season, going 1-2 with 17 strikeouts in 17.1 innings alongside a 7.27 ERA.

The Royals are 3-7 in their last 10 Wednesday games and 3-7 in their last 10 versus the American League Central. The over is 5-0-1 in the Royals’ last six during game two of a series and the under is 16-5 in their last 21 Wednesday games.

Meanwhile, the Tigers are 22-49 in their last 71 Wednesday games and 49-120 in their last 169 overall. Detroit is 23-61 in their last 84 during game two of a series and 23-64 in their last 87 home games.

Pick: I’m sticking with the Royals here. Singer had a great outing on Thursday in Cleveland, nearly notching himself a no-hitter. He would end up with eight shutout innings and eight strikeouts in that one. As for Skubal, he’s been all over the spectrum this season and is still trying to even himself out. This should be a pretty fun starting pitcher matchup, but I like Singer and the Royals to be in better position to take the win. The big victory by Detroit on Tuesday takes a bit of the proverbial wind out of the sails, but Kansas City should bounce back.
