San Diego Padres vs. Los Angeles Angels – 9/22/20 MLB Pick, Odds, and Prediction

2020-09-22 21:10:00 EDT

The Los Angeles Angels and the San Diego Padres meet Tuesday in MLB action from Petco Park.

This will be the first of two games between the Angels and the Padres this week. Los Angeles is coming off a four-game set versus the Rangers, winning two of the first three games. In the series finale on Monday, the Angels won the series with an 8-5 victory. As for the Padres, they played the Mariners over the weekend. San Diego lost Saturday but won the other two games to take the series. Check back all season long for free MLB picks and MLB predictions at Sports Chat Place.

The Angels had eight hits in the Monday victory, and scored seven of their eight runs in the fourth inning. Jared Walsh had the big swing with a grand slam to lead the offense, and starting pitcher Dylan Bundy went 5.0 innings with five hits and three earned.

In the Tuesday starting pitcher role, Los Angeles is sending out Griffin Canning. In 10 starts this season so far, Canning is 1-3 with a 4.29 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 50.1 innings of work. On his MLB career, Canning is 6-9 with a 4.48 ERA and 142 Ks in 140.2 innings.

Over on the Padres’ side, they’ve got a few important hitters in the lineup driving the offense. Manny Machado is tops with 16 homers and 46 RBI, 42 runs and a .314 batting average. Fernando Tatis is hitting .278 with 15 homers and 41 RBI, and Will Myers has a .298 BA with 14 homers, 38 RBI and 33 runs so far.

In the Tuesday starter slot, the Padres are going with Zach Davies. Over 10 starts this season, Davies is 7-3 with a 2.69 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 60.1 innings. Across his MLB career, Davies is 50-35 with a 3.80 ERA and 489 Ks in 674.2 innings total.

The Angels are 33-71 in their last 104 games as a road underdog and 6-14 in their last 20 interleague games. Los Angeles is 1-4 in the last five Tuesday games and 7-18 in their last 25 road games versus a right-handed starter.

Meanwhile, the Padres are 4-0 in their last four games following an off day and 17-5 in the last 22 games as a favorite. San Diego is 21-5 in the last 26 games as a home favorite and 15-2 in the last 17 during game one of a series.

Pick: I’m sticking with the Padres here. Davies is utilizing his changeup very well this year, and he’s held opposing batters to a paltry .186 batting average against it this season. Davies will be a big part of the San Diego rotation in the playoffs. As for Canning, he’s got a pretty nice 3.57 ERA over his past four starts with 23 Ks in 22.2 innings so he should do pretty well here. I like the Padres better behind Davies, though.
