The Cleveland Indians and the Detroit Tigers meet Sunday in MLB action from Comerica Park.
This will be the final installment of a three-game weekend set between these teams. On Thursday, Detroit eked out a one-run win. On Saturday, Detroit got another one, this time 5-2. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
Cleveland fell behind early in the Thursday game 3-0 after two innings. The Indians scored a pair in the ninth but ultimately fell 3-2. On Saturday, Cleveland fell into a 2-0 hole and never recovered during the loss. Eddie Rosario notched a pair of RBI and two walks in that one.
For the Sunday starting pitcher role, the Indians will send out Aaron Civale. Last season over 12 starts, Civale posted a 4.74 ERA with 69 strikeouts in 74.0 innings on a 4-6 record. He’ll look a little different this season; Civale changed up his throwing mechanics over the winter.
Over on the Detroit side, they got a nice start out of Matthew Boyd on Thursday for the opener win with 5.2 innings, three hits and four walks. In Saturday’s matchup, Detroit was nursing a one-run lead until the seventh, where they broke through with a trio fo runs. Nomar Mazara logged a 3-for-4 effort with an RBI.
For the Sunday game, the Tigers will be sending out Tarik Skubal. Last year Skubal went 1-4 with a 5.63 ERA across 32.0 innings. In three spring training starts, Skubal notched a 1.59 ERA with 11 hits and three earned runs over 17.0 innings of work.
The Indians are 18-8 in their last 26 Sunday games and 2-5 in their last seven road games versus a left-handed starter. The over is 18-7-2 in Cleveland’s last 27 Sunday games and the under is 5-2 in their last seven in game three of a series.
Meanwhile, the Tigers are 23-48 in their last 71 Sunday games and 17-36 in their last 53 in game three of a series. Detroit is 26-68 in their last 94 home games and 23-68 in their last 91 versus the AL Central.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on the Tigers here. Skubal saw fairly limited action last season but looked solid in his spring training appearances this year. In one game against the Indians in 2020, Skubal put up one run with five Ks in 2.1 innings of work. I like another good pitching performance from him in this one, putting Detroit in a position to bag a win.
