The Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Yankees meet in the rubber match of their three game AL East division set in MLB action from Yankee Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Toronto Blue Jays will look to rebound from a 5-3 loss to New York in game two of the series on Saturday. Marcus Semien led the way, going 2 for 4 with a solo home run and two RBIs while Cavan Biggio, Bo Bichette, Teoscar Hernandez, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Randal Grichuk all added base hit as well in the defeat. Ross Stripling ended up with the loss, falling to 0-1 after allowing three runs on seven hits with 5 strikeouts over 3.1 innings of work. T.J. Zeuch will start here and was 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA and 3 strikeouts last season. This will be Zeuch’s second career start against the Yankees.
The New York Yankees will look to finish off the comeback and win the series after Saturday’s triumph. Jay Bruce led the Yanks with two RBIs while Gary Sanchez added a solo home run and DJ LeMahieu went 2 for 4 with a solo home run. Aaron Hicks added an RBI as well to finish off New York’s scoring as a team in the win while Clint Frazier added a double and Aaron Judge and Gio Urshela each had two hits in the victory. Gleyber Torres added a base knock as well to cap off the offense for the Bronx Bombers in the winning effort. Corey Kluber allowed one run on five hits with five strikeouts over four innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Jonathan Loaisiga got the win after two shutout innings of relief while Chad Green closed out the 9th for the save. Domingo German will make the start here in his first regular season action since 2019 where he went 18-4 with a 4.03 ERA and 153 strikeouts for New York. In his career, German is 2-2 with a 3.10 ERA and 21 strikeouts against Toronto.
Toronto is 2-7 in their last 9 road games and 21-44 in their last 65 games as a road underdog while the over is 5-1-1 in their last 7 Sunday games. New York is 77-30 in their last 107 home games and 70-24 in their last 94 games as a home favorite while the over is 11-5 in their last 16 division games. The over is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings between these two teams.
I get the case that could be made for both sides here, as Toronto is still getting plenty of value against a pitcher in German that hasn’t seen regular season action in over a year, while the Yankees got back on track on Saturday and look poised to push ahead again on Sunday. Instead, I’m going to side with the under. Zeuch is a highly-prized piece of Toronto’s system and is highly-regarded for a reason, while German was still a solid arm when he was good to go in 2019 and you have to think he’s been chomping at the bit to get back out there and working. I think we see a duel here so give me the under.
