The Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates meet Sunday in MLB action from PNC Park.
This will be the final installment of a three-game set between these teams this weekend. On Thursday, the Cubs bagged a two-run win. In the Saturday game, Pittsburgh evened it up with a six-run victory. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
Chicago managed to win a pair of games against the Pirates in their first series, but fell 1-2 to the Brewers in the next trio. After a 4-2 Thursday victory over the Pirates, in the Saturday game the Cubs coughed up eight runs on nine hits, and could only muster a pair of runs themselves.
For the Sunday starting pitcher role, the Cubs will send out Trevor Williams. In his first outing of the season Monday versus the Brewers, Williams was able to bag a win. He went six innings with two runs, two walks and six strikeouts in that one.
Over on the Pirates’ side, after their 1-2 showing in the opening Cubs series things didn’t get much better. Pittsburgh fell in three straight to the Reds before Thursday’s loss. In the Saturday game the Pirates offense really got going with seven runs in the second inning. Starter Mitch Keller put up 5.0 innings with one earned.
For the starter job on Sunday, Pittsburgh will send out JT Brubaker. In his first start this year, Brubaker went four innings with three hits, one earned, four walks and six strikeouts. Interestingly enough Brubaker notched his first Major League hit in that one as well.
The Cubs are 5-2 in their last seven Sunday games and 20-9 in their last 29 games with the total set at 7.0-8.5. The under is 4-1 in the Cubs’ last five in game three of a series and 24-8-1 in their last 33 overall.
Meanwhile, the Pirates are 15-37 in their last 52 in game three of a series and 0-4 in their last four Sunday games. The under is 9-2-1 in Pitt’s last 12 Sunday games and 15-5-4 in their last 24 home games.
PICK: I’m sticking with Chicago in this one. We should have a nice starter matchup here, though. Williams was perfect through five innings in his first start of the year and kept the damage to a minimum in his win. Williams is also familiar with this lineup and should be effective. So long as the Cubs can tack up a few runs I think they’ll be fine.
