The Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets meet Thursday in MLB action from Citi Field.
This will be the final installment in a four-game set between these teams this week. The Mets took both games of the Tuesday doubleheader, then on Wednesday New York kept it going with a four-run victory. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
The Phillies didn’t have any luck in the Tuesday doubleheader opener to this series, falling 4-3 in game one and 4-0 in the nightcap. On Wednesday, the Phillies could only muster there hits as a team and fell in a 5-1 result. Jean Segura had the lone RBI there.
For the Thursday starting role, the Phillies will send out Zach Eflin. In his two starts so far this year (both versus the Braves), Eflin has five earned with 11 hits, two walks and 10 strikeouts in 13.0 innings total. That gives him a 3.46 ERA in the early-going.
Over on the Mets’ side, they notched a nice 4-3 walk-off win in game one Tuesday, with Dominic Smith accounting for two RBI and a run. Game two featured a nice start by Marcus Stroman. In the Wednesday game, starting pitcher David Peterson posted a good game with 6.0 innings, two hits, one earned and 10 strikeouts.
For Wednesday’s start, the Mets will go with Jacob deGrom. In his two starts so far deGrom is 0-1 with eight hits, one earned, two walks and 21 strikeouts in 14.0 innings. In that pair deGrom hasn’t had any luck in the win column despite a 0.64 ERA.
The Phillies are 6-1 in their last seven in game four of a series and 2-5 in their last seven Thursday games. The over is 5-1-1 in Philly’s last seven in game four of a series and 4-1 in their last five Thursday games.
Meanwhile, the Mets are 5-0 in their last five Thursday games and 0-4 in their last four in game four of a series. The over is 5-1 in New York’s last six in game four of a series and 6-2 in their last eight versus a right-handed starter.
PICK: I’m going to take the Mets. Even with deGrom on the mound, that’s something of a dice roll however. With Eflin on the mound for the Phillies, it may be hard for New York to find runs initially. That said, deGrom should put the Mets in a more than sufficient position to snag a win. I like New York better here—so long as the bats continue to show up.
