The Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Yankees meet Saturday in MLB action from Yankee Stadium.
This will be game two of a three-game weekend set between these teams. In the Friday opener, the Rays didn’t have too many issues in a dominant six-run win. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
Tampa Bay had some trouble with the Rangers this week, winning Monday and falling in the next three games. In the Friday opener versus the Yankees, Tampa Bay got off to a quick start and never looked back in a big 8-2 victory. Starting pitcher Michael Wacha posted 6.0 innings with one hit, no earned and nine strikeouts.
For the Saturday starting pitcher role, the Rays will send out Tyler Glasnow. Over his three games so far, Glasnow has a 0.46 ERA with seven hits, one earned, three walks and 29 Ks in 19.2 total innings of work. He’s coming off 7.2 innings with no earned versus the Rangers.
Over on the Yankees’ side, they posted a solid 3-1 win over the Jays on Monday but then lost the next pair and the series. In the Friday game, New York came up with just three hits as a team in the ugly defeat. Starter Nick Nelson went 1.0 innings with two earned.
For the starting role Saturday, New York will go with Jordan Montgomery. Through two starts this year, Montgomery has a 3.27 ERA with nine hits, four earned, two walks and 11 Ks through 11.0 innings. He gave up four earned in 5.0 innings in his last start versus the Rays.
The Rays are 6-1 in their last seven Saturday games and 45-22 in their last 67 versus the AL East. Tampa is 1-5 in their last six versus a lefty starter and the over is 6-1 in their last seven in game two of a series.
Meanwhile, the Yankees are 8-3 in their last 11 in game two of a series and 57-25 in their last 82 Saturday games. The under is 6-1 in New York’s last seven Saturday games and the over is 6-2 in their last eight in game two of a series.
PICK: I’m sticking with the Rays. Montgomery’s last start versus Tampa didn’t go so well; he gave up four runs on five hits in 5.0 innings and also plunked Austin Meadows twice. With the bad blood between these teams, things could get ugly. Considering the Rays’ pitching advantages, I like Tampa better on a win here. It will be nothing if not interesting.
