Boston didn’t have a lot of trouble with the Orioles over the weekend, taking the sweep with wins 8-1 Friday, 16-2 Saturday and 6-2 Sunday. In the Sunday win, Boston’s Eduardo Rodriguez put up 6.0 frames with three hits, three walks and no earned.
For the starter job in game one of the Tuesday doubleheader, Boston will send out Tanner Houck. Over 30.2 innings this year Houck has a 2.93 ERA and 44 Ks. As for game two, the Red Sox are going with Nathan Eovaldi. This year Eovaldi has a 10-7 record with a 3.92 ERA and 134 Ks.
Over on the Yankees’ side, they managed to beat the White Sox in the weekend games, taking Saturday 7-5 and Sunday 5-3. In the Monday game versus the Angels, New York posted just five hits but still managed a 2-1 win. Gerrit Cole put up 5.2 innings with two hits, one walk and one earned run.
Starting pitcher for game two on Tuesday will be the Yankees’ Luis Gil. In two starts this year Gil is 1-0 with a clean ERA and 14 strikeouts in 11.0 innings. As for the afternoon opener, it’ll be Jordan Montgomery starting. Montgomery is 4-5 with a 3.69 ERA and 115 Ks this year.
The Red Sox are 4-1 in the last five overall and 4-1 in their last five versus the AL East. Boston is 3-8 in their last 11 Tuesday games and 1-4 in their last five in game one of a series.
Meanwhile, the Yankees are 48-22 in their last 70 Tuesday games and 11-5 in their last 16 opening games of doubleheaders. New York is 95-42 in their last 137 at home versus a team with a winning record and the under is 5-2 in their last seven in game one of a series.
GAME 1 PICK: For game one I’m going to take a stab on Boston. I like Montgomery to do fairly well; he’s got just one earned over his last 15.2 innings across three starts. That said, it’ll be difficult for the Yankees bullpen and injury-riddled lineup to win both of these games.
GAME 2 PICK: I’m going Yankees here. Gil has been impressive over his first two games, totaling 11.0 innings with just six hits, three walks and no earned runs. If Gil can give five good frames or so in this one, New York should be in good shape. Should be a fun day of classic AL East rivalry overall.
