The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks meet Saturday in MLB action from Chase Field. This will be the third installment in a four-game weekend series. LA didn’t have much trouble in the Thursday opener. The Dodgers cruised to a 14-1 win with 24 team hits along the way. On Friday, Los Angeles scored four runs in the second inning on the way to a 6-4 victory. Ryan Pepiot finished with 4.1 innings, one earned, three hits and three walks.
Starter for the Dodgers on Saturday will be Tony Gonsolin. In his eight starts so far this year Gonsolin is 4-0 with a 1.62 ERA. In 39.0 innings he’s posted 22 hits, 16 walks, seven earned and 37 Ks.
Over on the Diamondbacks’ side, they gave up four runs in both the second and sixth innings on Thursday. In the Friday game, Arizona scored two in the ninth but couldn’t complete the comeback. Madison Bumgarner lasted 6.0 innings with five earned, seven hits and two walks.
As the starting pitcher on Saturday the Diamondbacks are going with Merrill Kelly. Over nine starts this year Kelly is 3-2 with a 3.49 ERA. In his 49.0 innings Kelly has 46 hits, 19 earned, 18 walks and 42 strikeouts.
The Dodgers are 77-31 in their last 108 overall and 35-16 in their last 51 Saturday games. LA is 37-16 in their last 53 versus the NL West.
Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks are 21-57 in the last 78 versus the NL West and 19-49 in the last 68 in game three of a series. Arizona is 8-3 in the last 11 Saturday games.
PICK: I’m going to stay with the Dodgers here. Gonsolin has been on a tear this season en route to his 4-0 record and 1.62 ERA. Over the last three games Gonsolin has just three earned on seven hits and seven walks in a span of 17.0 innings. As for Kelly, he’s given up 14 earned in 12.0 innings over his last three starts. LA should be in good hands with Gonsolin setting the table for game three.
