Detroit Tigers Betting Preview

In the Thursday opener of this series (and the season), the Tigers managed to eke out a 1-0 win. Andy Ibanez had the lone RBI in that victory. On Saturday in game two, Detroit eked out another win 7-6 in 10 innings. Detroit was down 6-3 at one point but clawed their way back. Mark Canha finished with three hits, three runs, three RBI and a homer.

As starting pitcher for the Sunday matchup, the Tigers will send out Jack Flaherty. In his 29 games (27 starts) last year, Flaherty went 8-9 with a 4.99 ERA with the Cardinals and Orioles. In his career Flaherty is 42-34 with a 3.75 ERA in 131 games (125 starts) alongside 748 Ks. The Tigers will play against the Mets in the series after this one.

Chicago White Sox Betting Preview

Over on the White Sox’ side, they wasted a nice start from Garrett Crochet (6.0 innings; one earned) on Thursday. Chicago could muster only three team hits on offense. In the Saturday matchup, the Sox fought back from an early 3-0 hole but couldn’t hang on. Luis Robert finished with three hits, two homers and four RBI, though.

It’ll be Erick Fedde in the starting role for the White Sox on Sunday. Last year over 27 starts Fedde managed a 6-13 record with a 5.81 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 127.0 innings. Fedde is 21-33 with a 5.41 ERA in his career over 102 total games (88 starts). Following this series, the White Sox will meet the Braves.

Chicago White Sox Team Facts

  • The White Sox have lost each of their last nine games at Guaranteed Rate Field following an extra innings loss.
  • The White Sox have covered the run line in eight of their last nine day games against American League opponents following a loss.

Detroit Tigers Team Facts

  • The Tigers have won each of their last 13 day games against AL Central opponents.
  • The Tigers have failed to cover the run line in eight of their last nine day games against the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field following a win.
  • The Tigers have led after 7 innings in each of their last seven Sunday games against opponents that held a losing record.

Tigers vs White Sox Prediction

I’ll lean toward Detroit here. It’s going to depend on what Flaherty can do in the start, though. Over his last couple of seasons, Flaherty has taken a step back from his peak in 2019 (2.75 ERA; 11 wins). If he can stay above .500 this year though, Flaherty should be a solid asset to the Tigers rotation. In the Saturday game, Detroit survived a rough start by Kenta Maeda (3.1 innings; six earned) thanks to a solid offensive performance. Canha and Carson Kelly did most of the work with five RBI between them.

As for Chicago, they had good outings from Robert and Braden Shewmake (two runs; two hits) but didn’t get a whole lot going on offense after the fourth inning. I don’t think they’ll quite rebound to prevent the sweep.
