The San Francisco Giants and the Cleveland Guardians meet Saturday in MLB action from Progressive Field. This will be the second installment in a three-game weekend series. On Friday in the opener, the Giants pulled off a three-run victory. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
San Francisco won two of three games versus the Marlins in their opener series, then took two of three from the Padres in the next series. On Friday, the Giants scored two runs in the eighth on the way to a 4-1 victory. Carlos Rodon put up 7.0 innings with one earned on two hits and two walks.
Starting pitcher for the Giants on Saturday will be Anthony DeSclafani. In his first start of the year, DeSclafani put up 3.2 innings versus the Marlins with eight hits, two earned and a walk. DeSclafani has a career 50-46 record with a 4.07 ERA.
Over on the Cleveland side, they were able to split a quartet of games versus the Royals in their first series, then took two over the Reds. On Friday, Cleveland had just three hits in the loss. Starter Zach Plesac posted 5.1 frames with two earned on seven hits and a walk.
Cal Quantrill is taking the mound for Cleveland on Saturday. In his first start of the year Quantrill got a win with 5.0 frames, two earned, four hits and a walk. He holds a 17-11 career record with a 3.64 ERA.
The Giants are 15-5 in their last 20 in game two of a series and 39-14 in their last 53 versus a right-handed starter. San Francisco is 49-21 in their last 70 overall.
Meanwhile, the Guardians are 2-5 in their last seven Saturday games and 3-8 in their last 11 in game two of a series. The over is 6-1 in Cleveland’s last seven in game two of a series.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Cleveland here. Quantrill put up a pretty solid line in his debut (two earned in 5.0 innings) so he’s off to a good start. Quantrill was right around his career ERA of 3.64, so a couple of earned every five innings or so should be his expected pace. As for DeSclafani, he had some ups and downs on the eight hits in his 3.2 innings during his debut, but overall he came out of it unscathed. That said, I think Quantrill and the Guardians win the battle in game two. The bats do need to wake up, though; Friday was a pretty flat offensive performance.
