San Diego Padres
The Padres took a rough 9-0 loss to the Diamondbacks on Friday, but otherwise did well in the weekend series. San Diego won 7-5 Thursday, 5-3 Saturday and 7-5 on Sunday. Starting pitcher Yu Darvish put up 5.2 innings with one earned on two hits and five walks in the finale.
For the starter job in the Tuesday game, San Diego will send out Blake Snell. In four starts this year Snell is 0-3 with a 6.00 ERA and 21 Ks in 18.0 innings. Over his career Snell is 57-49 with a 3.47 ERA in 163 games.
Chicago Cubs
Over on the Cubs’ side, they bagged a 13-0 shutout win over the Dodgers on Friday. Chicago lost the other three games, however: 6-2 Thursday, 9-4 Saturday and 7-3 Sunday. In the finale, starter Marcus Stroman put up 5.0 innings with five earned, six hits and a walk.
The Padres are 1-4 in their last five Tuesday games and 1-4 in their last five in game one of a series. San Diego is 7-3 in their last 10 road games.
Meanwhile, the Cubs are 7-1 in their last eight Tuesday games and 5-1 in their last six after a loss. Chicago is 12-3 in their last 15 in game one of a series.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll probably take a stab on the Cubs here. Steele is on a nice roll right now with wins in three straight games. During that stretch Steele has 20.0 combined innings with four earned, 11 hits and seven walks. A quality start would go a long way here. As for Snell, he’s had some troubles this year so far but he wasn’t bad in his last outing (5.0 innings; two earned) during a loss to the Braves. I like a fairly low scoring game and a good outing from both starters in the opener. Should be a good one.
