The New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers meet Monday in MLB action from Comerica Park. The Yankees are fresh off a series versus the Rays. New York Yankees 

The Yankees posted a 6-2 win over the rival Rays on Friday, but then hit the skids with a 3-0 shutout loss in game two. New York’s DJ LeMahieu had the only two hits in that defeat. On Sunday the Yankees had just four team hits in a 7-4 defeat. LeMahieu, Anthony Volpe and Kyle Higashioka each had a home run. 

For the starter job in the Monday matchup the Yankees will send out Luis Severino. In his 16 games (15 starts) so far Severino is 3-8 with a 7.26 ERA and 63 strikeouts over 74.1 innings. Severino has gone 2-4 with a 7.11 ERA in his last seven games (six starts).

Miguel Cabrera (three RBI) and Zach McKinstry (solo) each homered along the way. 

As starting pitcher Monday the Tigers will go with Reese Olson. Over 15 games (12 starts) in 2023 Olson is 2-5 with a 5.29 ERA and 68 Ks in 68.0 innings. Olson is 1-3 in his last seven starts with a 6.49 ERA along the way.

I’ll probably go with the Yankees. Probably also staying away though, as it’s tough to trust Severino (and New York as a whole) right now. Severino did well in his last start with 6.2 clean frames in a win over Washington with one hit and two walks. In his two starts prior however, Severino was 0-2 with seven earned in 6.0 frames. It’s tough telling which version of him we’ll get in this opener. On Sunday New York had a few electric moments at the plate but overall it was a tepid offensive effort. The Yankees may get another solid outing from Severino here though, so I think they’ve got a shot.
