The Los Angeles Angels and the New York Yankees meet Thursday in MLB action from Yankee Stadium. This will be the final installment in a four-game set between these teams this week. After a split in the first pair, on Wednesday the Angels posted a big comeback win. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
Los Angeles managed a 5-3 win over the Yankees in the Monday opener, but then fell 11-5 in the Tuesday game. On Wednesday, the Angels scored seven runs in the ninth to secure a wild 11-8 victory. Starter Shohei Ohtani lasted just 0.2 innings with seven earned on two hits and four walks.
For the Thursday game, Los Angeles will send out Griffin Canning in the starting role. Over his 60.0 innings this year Canning has 59 hits, 35 runs (33 earned), 12 homers allowed, 26 walks, 62 strikeouts and a 4.95 ERA.
Over on the Yankees’ side, they finally got their offense working in the Tuesday game with 11 runs on 11 hits. On Wednesday, New York blew another great opportunity by blowing a ninth-inning lead. Aroldis Chapman gave up four earned on a hit and three walks in just 0.1 innings.
For the starter job on Thursday, New York will go with Jordan Montgomery. Across 82.0 innings this year, Montgomery has 76 hits, 40 runs (37 earned), nine homers allowed, 23 walks, 80 Ks and a 4.06 ERA.
The Angels are 2-5 in their last seven Thursday games and 36-78 in their last 114 road games versus a team with a winning record. The over is 6-0 in LA’s last six road games versus a lefty starter and 6-2 in their last eight Thursday games.
Meanwhile, the Yankees are 46-16 in their last 62 at home versus a team with a losing record and 99-48 in the last 147 home games. The over is 4-0-1 in New York’s last five Thursday games and the under is 10-3-1 in their last 14 in game four of a series.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on the Angels in this one. Montgomery has been decent but not great over his last four starts, giving up three or more earned runs in three of those. The good news is that he’s gone at least 5.1 innings in each, but has only completed 6.0 in one. As for Canning, he’s got five earned over his last three starts in a span of 16.2 innings. If Canning can keep the Yankees offense in check I think LA will have some opportunities to score.
