The Philadelphia Phillies and the Miami Marlins meet Sunday in MLB action from Marlins Park. This will be the final installment in a three-game weekend set. The Marlins took a seven-run victory in the Friday opener, then on Saturday Miami won again in a comeback. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
Philadelphia couldn’t find much offense in the Friday game, notching six hits in a 10-3 defeat. In the Saturday game two, the Phillies had a 2-0 lead for most of the game but couldn’t hang on in a 3-2 defeat. Ranger Suarez lasted 5.0 innings with two hits, two walks and no earned runs.
For the starter job in the Sunday finale, Philadelphia didn’t initially announce a name.
Over on the Marlins’ side, they bagged 10 team hits in the big Friday victory. On Saturday, the Marlins posted three runs in the bottom of the eighth during their comeback win. Trevor Rogers put up 4.1 frames with two earned runs on six hits and two walks.
For the Sunday starting pitcher role, the Marlins will go with Elieser Hernandez. This season over his 27.1 innings of work Hernandez has 26 hits, 12 runs (11 earned), seven homers allowed, five walks and 27 strikeouts.
The Phillies are 7-1 in their last eight Sunday games and 7-2 in their last nine in game three of a series. Philly is 19-7 in their last 26 versus the NL East and the over is 4-1 in their last five Sunday games.
Meanwhile, the Marlins are 5-11 in their last 16 overall and 4-9 in their last 13 versus a right-handed starter. The under is 4-1 in Miami’s last five Sunday games and the over is 18-7-2 in the last 28 with a total of 9.0-10.5.
PICK: I’m going to try the Marlins in this one. Hernandez has really only had one sketchy outing so far this year: 4.2 innings with five hits, two walks, two homers and four earned runs versus the Reds on August 20. Outside of that, Hernandez hasn’t given up more than two earned in any start. If he can limit the long ball in this one (Hernandez has given up at least one homer in each start so far), I think Miami will be within striking distance.
